“Wow.”
“Yep.” That about summed it up.
Mase’s gaze swung from my face to my mark and then back again. “What are you going to do?”
I shrugged. “I’m not sure. I guess I’m going to have to tell David, my coven leader, at some point.”
Mase grimaced. “Makes sense. It’s not like it’s something you can hide. Well…” He faltered, another flash of hurt in his eyes, and I reached out to grab his hand as he sat back.
“I’m sorry.” I’d say it a hundred times if I had to.
“I know.Fuck.” He tipped his head back against the sofa cushions, eyes closed. It felt like an age passed before he looked at me again. “And I’m not mad, Nick. Not now. Hurt that you thought you couldn’t trust me? A little. But I understand why you didn’t want to. I’ve not been back in your life for long, and that was a huge secret you were carrying.”
I drew my bottom lip between my teeth, then asked, “So we’re good?” I’d lost his friendship once when I left Bude. I didn’t want to lose it again.
“Yeah,” he said, pulling me into a hug. “We’re good.”
“Thank fuck.” The relief at his words was almost overwhelming and I held him tight.
It was also short-lived though, because Mase wasn’t the only one I needed to talk to, and once again I had no idea how he was going to take the news.
Only one way to find out.
DATHAL
Gabriel and Maxarrived a few hours later.
I knew the moment Gabriel walked through the door and met my eyes.
Nick told him.
He didn’t say anything, didn’t have to. I felt it in my bones.
Nick had told him about his magic.
From the way he side-eyed me, I was certain Nick had told him about us too.
I wondered if Max knew, but neither of them brought it up, and I wasn’t about to.
After going through the questions Gabriel and I needed to ask Blake Tehlin, Max left to go sort out some pack business.
“Is everything all right with him?” I asked, watching Max drive off.
Gabriel sighed. “I don’t know. There’s something going on within his and Jake’s pack, but he won’t talk about it. Won’t or can’t, maybe.” Gabriel shrugged, then turned narrowed eyes on me. “I saw you and Nick leave together last night.”
I didn’t answer.
If he had something to ask me, then he needed to spell it out. I wasn’t about to make it easy for him.
“He told me the two of you went back to his cottage.”
I’d thought as much. I wondered just how much he’d told him.
Gabriel ran a hand through his black hair, expression worried. “He didn’t tell me details. Nick’s not like that, but he showed me his wrist.”
“How do you feel about that?” I asked.
He opened his mouth, then snapped it shut. It took him another moment to speak. “I understand why he didn’t tell me.”
