“Makes sense.” I ran my fingers through his hair. “If Blake isn’t the one poisoning non-humans, then someone else is. Did any of the other victims have something in common, or were they chosen at random?”

“I’ve asked myself that time and again.” Gabriel bit his lip, body taut with tension.

I didn’t like it and neither did my wolf, but I couldn’t solve his case for him, no matter how much I wanted to.

“The first two had no known connections that we could ascertain, apart from living in the same town.”

“Your town, right?”

Gabriel raised a brow. “Yes, how did you know?”

“I googled. It’s not exactly hard to find out.”

“Fair enough.”

“Did you know them?” It was a throw-away question, I hadn’t put much thought into it, but Gabriel stiffened.

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Nothing. I was just asking.” I held him close when he went to pull away. “Don’t,” I murmured.

After a moment or two, he settled back into my side. “I didn’t know them well,” he said after a bit. “But I’d met them both in passing.”

I didn’t speak, not wanting to connect dots that weren’t necessarily there.

“And I’d met Blake, obviously.”

The warmth coming from Gabriel morphed into something sharp and fractured.

“It’s a coincidence,” I murmured into his hair. “That’s all.”

“Is it?”

“You’ve never met Callum, have you?”

Gabriel shook his head. “I don’t think so.”

“There you go. What about the other two victims?”

“No. I only got there after the attacks.”

I kissed the top of his head. “See. Coincidence.”

He seemed placated on the surface, but I knew he wasn’t entirely convinced.

“What are your plans for today?” As much as I wanted to stay in Gabriel’s bedroom forever, we both had lives to get back to.

“I need to go into the office and meet up with Max.” Gabriel groaned and rubbed a hand over his eyes. “He’s going to know, isn’t he?”

I blew out a breath, wondering how to break it to him. “Um, Gabriel?”

He looked up at me, eyebrows furrowed at whatever vibes I was giving off. “What?”

“Most non-humans can spot a soulbond.”

His eyes widened. “So everyone’ll take one look at me andknow?”

“Pretty much.”
