Max came up to stand beside me. “Looks like half the department showed up.” He clapped me on the shoulder. “I’ll deal with them. We’ll get your house sorted out too.”
I shuddered at the thought of Tombs’ dead body.
“There might be more Blue Alhuirn in there.” I gestured vaguely behind me.
“I’ll organise to have it taken care of,” Lady Sarhin answered, stepping away.
Max scratched the back of his head. “You’ll need to come in to answer some questions, but being with your injured mate trumps that.” He gestured to where Rys was being loaded into an ambulance. “Go.”
RYS
I awoketo the sound of whispered voices.
I recognised both of them.
Max and Sasha.
Why they were in my bedroom, I had no idea.
Why was I, come to think if it? My head felt heavy, thoughts a little jumbled, and it took longer than usual to open my eyes. “Hey,” I managed, but even my voice was scratchy.
Max and Sasha stopped talking and stared at me a moment before breaking out in huge smiles.
“Finally.” Max strode over to the bed, Sasha hot on his heels.
I frowned. “How long have I been asleep?” The warmth along my side moved, and it was only then I realised I wasn’t alone in bed. Gabriel was tucked up beside me, sleeping like the dead.
“Don’t wake him,” Max murmured. “He’s exhausted.”
On further inspection, I noticed the dark shadows under his eyes. Pinching the bridge of my nose, I struggled to remember how I’d got here.
Things were… fuzzy.
“Help me out,” I said, looking from Sasha to Max. “What’s going on?”
Max frowned. “How much do you remember?”
“I got Gabriel’s message. Axel and I went to Midnight to meet him and… not a lot after that.”
“Right.” Max winced and I had a horrible feeling I’d missed something huge. “That was eight days ago.”
I gaped at him. “Eightdays?”
Gabriel stirred beside me, so I lowered my voice. “What the fuck happened to me?”
Sasha leant on the door frame. “Tombs kidnapped you and Axel. Took you to Gabriel’s house and used you as bait to lure Gabriel there.”
As she spoke, something stirred in my head.
Flashbacks.
Axel lying on the floor.
So much blood…
“Axel?” I sat up, careful not to disturb Gabriel. “He’s okay?” Neither of them looked like anyone had died, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t hurt.
Max rubbed the back of his neck, not meeting my eyes.
