He fucking hoped for the latter because they needed to start planning, and they couldn’t do that until they knew what numbers they were working with.
Human and shifter.
Logan waited for him when he returned, standing just outside the entrance to the cave.
Michael shifted back and met him with a smile. “What’s up?”
“Callum brought breakfast while you were down on the beach.”
No Isaac, then. The stab of disappointment was unwelcome but not unexpected.
“He said Isaac’s trying to lose any of our scents as the HRU could come any time now.”
“Makes sense.” Michael indicated for Logan to go back inside. “Did he have any news?”
The others had woken up in his absence and now sat around eating, all back in their human form. They glanced up as Michael and Logan approached.
When he’d pulled on some clothes, Aaron handed him a large foil-covered plate as he sat down.
Logan sat opposite. “Some of the packs have been in touch.”
Since phone reception down in the cave was negligible, Michael had given his phone to Isaac. He wondered which packs had been in touch. “Did he say who?”
“No.” Logan shook his head. “But he did say that Isaac was making a note of it all and he’d send the information down to us shortly.”
“Any news on the HRU visit?” Michael asked, although if they were on their way, he imagined Callum would’ve led with that.
“No.” Logan chanced a glance at Cole who was deep in conversation with Aaron. “But the human leaders of the CEG are keen to meet with us.”
Michael raised his eyebrows at that. “Us?”
“Yeah. They want Cole to be at the meeting.”
He nodded.
It made sense.
Cole had briefly met some members the night they’d fled. But he was also a new ex-candidate.
If the humans were going to trust any shifter, it was going to be Cole.
“Did they say when?”
“Isaac told them he’d be in touch after the HRU have been. Said it’s not safe for a face-to-face meet before then.”
And it needed to be face to face. A person’s scent could reveal a lot about them and their intentions.
Michael unwrapped the foil on his plate as his stomach rumbled. “I’m guessing they want to come here?” He took a mouthful of eggs and waited for Logan to answer. It wasn’t like they could exactly leave the safety of Mothecombe. Not yet anyway. By now, every pack in the country would’ve been ordered to look for them.
Unless Baker had managed to convince them it was better to keep it quiet.
“Yeah, that’s what Callum said.”
Michael finished his breakfast and set his plate aside. “Did they leave a way for us to contact anyone up there?” He got that they needed to hide, but feeling cut off from everything when there was so much that needed doing? He hated it.
Logan shook his head. “No. But he did say he’d be back within the hour with the information.”
Okay.
