I squirm in my seat and Noah takes notice, his heated eyes zeroing in on where I’ve squeezed my thighs together.
And then a nurse steps into the doorway.
“Lucy Sage?”
???
“That was so incredible!” I exclaim as Noah pulls the SUV back out into traffic. He keeps a hand on my thigh and I love the warmth, the comfort it brings. Love that he wants to be touching me, always.
“It sure was. I thought the last one was amazing, but you could see even more detail this time.”
“Yeah. Pretty sure I saw a little wiener too.”
“You didnot!”
I nod. “Yep, I think I did. Maybe we made a mistake not finding out,” I muse.
“Are you kidding me right now?”
“Only a little …”
“Well, we can always go back. I’m sure the doctor knows and can still tell us,” he suggests, but I shake my head.
“No, we decided to wait and we’re sticking to it,” I say, trying to convince myself as much as him.
He just nods.
“So you really think you saw a penis?”
“Nah, probably not. But Idokind of think it’s a boy now.”
“Huh.”
“What doyouthink?”
He shrugs and checks his blind spot before merging into the other lane.
Noah has refrained from speculating about the sex of the baby pretty much this entire time, insisting repeatedly that he’ll be happy with either. So will I, but I still think it’s fun to try and guess. I can tell I won’t get anything out of him now, though, and decide to change the subject.
“So, apparently Riley’s going to be at the dinner on Thursday.”
He nods. “I assumed so–isn’t he living with his mom temporarily while he gets himself settled back in here? As far as I know, he’s still unemployed.”
“Yeah. Piper’s all concerned about how Aidan’s going to behave, though, with his brother there. She says the two of them in the same room for an extended period of time is going to be like waiting for a bomb to go off.” Things still remain tense between them since Riley moved back home a few months ago after essentially being estranged from his family for over a decade and a half. It doesn’t look like they’re going to be able to work out their issues anytime soon, either.
Noah nods. “Aidan’s mentioned a bit about it to me. I gather they used to be pretty close and Riley’s ghosting of them really hurt him. To be honest, though, I’m more concerned about how Steph’s going to react.”
I gasp, turning in my seat to face him. “Oh my God, are you talking about that night at Aroma?”
He nods again. “Yeah. And it’s not the only time I’ve seen her reacting like that in his presence, or seen him watching her with this look …” he trails off, frowning as though trying to make sense of it. “The dude follows her every move with the most intense eyes.”
“I know right? I don’t get it though. I remember they used to date back in high school, but it’s been over fifteen years. Even if it ended badly you’d think they’d be over it by now.”
“She doesn’t talk about it? I thought you girls shared all that kind of stuff.”
I shrug. “Piper and I do, but Steph’s always been really tight-lipped about her past, and relationships, sex … all of it.”
“Hmm. Well, not everyone is an over-sharer like you,” he teases, and then adds, “I shudder to think what you’ve told them about me.”
