“Wait a second.” I turn to Hazel, eyes trailing to her legs.
“I’m not going to grow a fucking tail!”
I scoff. “How am I supposed to know that? You never tell me anything!”
Hazel grumbles, turning her back to me as she tightens the strap of her black duffel bag.
I sigh in defeat. Fine. I’ll annoy her about it some other day.
Too bad I can’t turn to Grace for answers. My own sister made a pact ages ago to keep the siren’s precious secrets. I know I wasn’t even in the picture then, but still!Family betrayals sting the worst.
After taking another deep breath, everyone turns to me, waiting. When he’s sure I won’t interrupt again, Angel starts the countdown.
At three, we all jumped… well, theydid.
I have no intention of willingly launching myself off a fucking cliff into the dark and scary ocean. Who knows what kind of creepy creatures are in there?
I’m debating over whether to stand here forever or sit beside Diamond and wait for everyone to return, when someone shoves me from behind.
I scream all the way down, hurling every curse word I know at whoever committed the highest form of treachery by pushing me without a fucking warning.
I should’ve known one of them would stay behind to make sure I jumped. I find out whothe asshole is when Harvey jumps right after me, swimming deeper before I can catch him.
Wait ‘til I get my hands on the piece of shit I call my best friend.
When I open my eyes again, I’m on solid ground and bone dry, but I can’t see anything through the dense grey fog surrounding me.
As soon as I sense Harvey to my left, I jump on his back, wrapping my arms around his neck and cursing the traitorous cliff-pushing bastard.
Angel quickly comes to Harvey’s rescue and pulls me off my hysterical best friend, who didn’t even try to get out of the chokehold because he was too busy laughing like a constipated cow.
Like I said, family betrayals sting the worst.
Angel holds me against his chest, whispering soothing words in my ear, hoping to stop me from knocking Harvey’s teeth out. My mate is smart enough not to let me go, as he asks Seiji to clear the fog.
“Uh, I totally would, only there’s a tiny problem.”
Hazel stomps through the fog and grabs Seiji by the collar. “Don’t you dare tell me your Divine isn’t working.”
“I wish I could.” He laughs nervously, snapping his fingers again and again, but nothing happens.
“This is Anxo’s fault!”
“Wait, what—What did I do?”
“You didn’t let me take mytenthdagger. I told you it’s bad luck to carry an odd number of weapons.”
“And you couldn’t just… I don’t know… toss one out?”
“Don’t be ridiculous, Conquer. Why in the sweet hell would I do that?”
Without his powers, Seiji can’t clear the fog. So Angel forms a human chain and leads us through the mist, hoping it will clear out soon.
“Nothing’s changed. We still need to find Micah and get out within a limited time frame. So stay sharp and rely on your senses. We’ve trained for this.” Angel keeps boosting morale as we move, and I can feel his relief when the fog starts thinning.
When the fog finally lifts, I take in the mysterious realm. Looking at it now, I can’t believe how anyone can convince you to stay in this place for eternity.
Everything is black.
