“And I’ve heard stories about almost all of them blaming a certain mouthy siren for their passionate hatred for us,” Seiji adds, which earns him a stink eye from Hazel, but for the first time, he has the opportunity to get her in trouble, and he’s taking full advantage of it.
“Come out, you demented abomination! I have a debt to repay!”
Uh-oh.I take it back; I still have a hand in this mess.
So that’s Victor, another high-ranking warlock I have a teeny tiny issue with. I have a long list of haters, but this guy tops the list.
“I’m actually very busy, but my mate would happily take my place!” I shout back.
“Seriously, you sell me out that easy? I’m offended, sweetheart.” Despite feigning offense, Angel pecks me before turning back to Hazel. “I want a list of everyone you’ve pissed off and why, when we get home.”
On Hazel’s frown, he adds, “I won’t make amends if you had a good reason like Hermes, but I can’t have people schemingbehind my back just because they asked about your heritage or looked at your daggers a certain way.”
Hazel’s face sours as she grumbles under her breath before agreeing. Seiji walks over to the window—cracking his neck, fingers, shoulders, and back while peering outside. I didn’t even know you could crack your back like that.
“Grab my inhaler Grace; I’m about to fuck these bitches up.”
“But you don’t have asthma. In fact, you can’t—”
“You don’t understand dramatic effect, do you?” On his sassy reply, Grace backs up with her hands raised.
When Angel comes to stand in front of me, effectively hiding me from view, I get this insane urge to kick his knee from behind. I swear on everything in this dumb realm, if he asks me to hide behind him like some damsel in distress, I’m going to punch his pretty face!
A hand nudges me, and I look down to see Angel holding his hand out for me. He gently me beside him. “Ready to kick some ass, sweetheart?”
The mischievous smirk on his face promises chaos, and I’m here for it.He’s definitely getting extra kisses tonight.
Grace unstraps her crossbow and jogs up the stairs to cover one of the large windows upstairs. Following her lead, Angel leaves to set up camp upstairs where the duo will have a better vantage point to aim.
The soul twins cover the windows on the left side of the house while Seiji and I take the right. I’m confused if they’re just idiots or extremely confident that they aren’t bothering with surrounding the cabin.
I pity the fool who taught these warriors such weak-ass battle strategies. Papa would’ve laughed until he cried if he was here.
“I can’t believe Heaven is conspiring with the coven. What the fuck did we ever do to them?” I mumble to myself, not exactly expecting an answer.
“What did we ever do to them, you ask Grim’sunnaturalchild?” Seiji looks at me like I’ve grown two heads. “Are you forgetting the war caused by a certain someone whobrokeinto Heaven, stoleenough Divine tomakehis daughter and named her backwards Heaven just to get that‘fuck you guys’across?”
“That’s history.”
“History in which they lost. I think we’ve given them more than enough motive to make a deal with the witches,” he gulps nervously, counting their numbers. “I’m glad we have your murderous tendencies to rely on today. Not to forget the twisted soul siblings over there.”
Victor barks just as the first round ofpoisonous arrowscomes flying in our direction. To reiterate, I really don’t like witches. “I should’ve killed you when I had the chance!”
Grumbling under her breath, Hazel aims through the window but makes sure only the top of her head is visible. She shoots with such precision that the bullet lands perfectly between Victor’s eyes.Damn girl.
The thud of Victor’s body hitting the ground breaks the eerie silence before Heaven’s soldiers charge forward, shooting viciously as they try to get closer to the weakly built structure of this house.
The way Victor’s death caused them such deep resentment gives away just how close Heaven has gotten to these snakes.
With a warrior cry, one of them runs straight at the door, making it fall to the ground with enough force to make me flinch. I thought I knew how far someone would go when they didn’t have much to live for, but watching these warriors run at the house to break our defense and not caring about the bullets between their eyes made my blood run cold.
Just like we trained, Angel and Grace stand guard from the second floor over the railing, raining arrows on anyone who crosses the trashed doorframe. Harvey and Seiji switch theirempty guns with whips and swords, working as a team to cover the left part of the house.
Beside me, Hazel slices men open before tossing me two Wakizashi swords that I tuck into my belt. I still have a few bullets left before I’ll need to whip out the two mini swords. Together, we start clearing up our side of the room as more and more warriors barge inside, and we struggle to keep our pace.
No more than thirty warriors are left since the boys are doing a great job of tackling their side. I take a second look when I see Grace now standing on the dining table, her crossbow dripping with blood.
A sudden pain in my left arm alerts me back to my surroundings just in time to dodge another strike.Bloody Heaven-bound assholes.I somehow end up getting cornered when half a dozen warriors form a circle around me, choosing me as their sole target.
