Lucia finishes nursing, and I shift her to my shoulder for burping, patting her back gently. When she lets out a small burp, he laughs and reaches over to stroke her dark hair.
"She's perfect," he says, brushing a finger over her cheek. "I can't believe we made her."
"I can't believe she's real." I press a kiss to Lucia's head. "I spent so long imagining what this would be like—having a family with you, raising a child together—but the reality is so much better than anything I pictured."
"Even with the sleep deprivation and the constant diaper changes and the fact that we haven't had a real conversation in three days?"
"Even with all of that." I smile at him.
He leans in and kisses me softly, and I rest my forehead against his for a moment, our baby cradled between us.
There’s no question any longer that we’ve found our home in each other. That the past is all forgiven, and that the love we’ve found has made everything worth it.
