“You look like one,” he murmured. “More now than you did then. Beautiful.”
I turned my face away from his. This was dangerous. Not just because of his obvious interest in me, but because I was reacting to him in a way that I shouldn’t. I liked the way he was looking at me and I liked the way he touched me.
Ghost would be furious if he knew. So this had to stop right now. I had to stay away from the Savage Sons and the men who rode with them.
“Anyone would have done the same,” I yawned widely.
Pocket chuckled. “Try to get some sleep, Chloe. We can talk another time.”
“Thanks, Pocket.” I smiled before I could help myself. “Why do they call you that? That’s not your real name, is it?” I couldn’t help but ask.
Laughing, he settled himself back on the couch cushions. “It’s a long, boring story. You would be asleep in seconds.”
“Well, tell me then. I’m usually the one who has to tell the bedtime stories. It will be nice to hear one for a change.” Closing my eyes, I let my head fall on to his shoulder.
Pocket's arm came around my shoulders and I relaxed totally.
It was such a strange thing to feel relaxed against a man I didn’t even know. It felt wrong, but at the same time, it felt so right.
“I’m Pocket because of my size. You know, pocket-sized.”
He wasn’t pocket sized at all. Pocket was at least six foot six. There was nothing small about him. Which might have been the joke. “I see,” I said sleepily, although I didn’t see at all.
“It started when I was prospecting.” I heard him say in his deep melodious voice, but that was all that I heard because sleep took me almost instantly.
Chapter Four
“Here you are.”
Opening my eyes, I stared at Duke like he had two heads. Which, in my half asleep state, it looked like he did because my eyes were blurry.
“Sssh.” Glancing down, I smiled at the pretty face in my lap. Chloe was sleeping peacefully, her lips half parted and a soft snore coming from her.
I’d never had a woman fall asleep in my lap before. Well, not while we were fully dressed, anyway. Grinning, I met Duke’s eyes again and the look on his face made my smile disappear.
“What’s happened?”
“Not here and not in front of her.” Duke jerked his head.
As gently as I could, I slid from beneath Chloe, leaving her curled up on the sofa. I followed my club brother out of the room and down the still dark corridor. We didn’t move far until he turned on me.
“What the hell are you doing, Pocket?” He hissed, whirling on me and pushing at my shoulder.
Confused, I rubbed at my ribs, which were complaining painfully from the sudden movement. “What the hell are you on about?”
Duke’s eyes widened. “If Ghost had been the one to find you, he would have put you back in the hospital.” He motioned to the open doorway.
I fought the urge to roll my eyes. I respected Ghost, but the man was failing fast. He wouldn’t have been able to take me even if I was injured.
“What the hell are you going on about?”
Duke’s sigh was loud in the quietness. “Just be careful, ok? I know she’s a pretty little thing, but Ghost seems to have a major hard on for her and you don’t want to be stepping on those particular toes.”
I reeled backwards. “Fuck off. Ghost is more than twice her age. I don’t know how they know each other, but I can’t see her being into that.”
“Yeah, I didn’t see it either, but…” Duke's eyes skirted around like he almost expected to see someone watching on. It was too early for that and after last night’s party, I knew from experience that no one but some of the more hardcore club girls would be up yet. I was even surprised that he was.
“He’s asked me to put her up in one of my places.” Duke’s voice dropped to a whisper. “He’s paying.”
