“And you are just going to sit back and let her walk away without at least fighting for her? Are you really ready to lose her?”
I wasn’t losing her, if she was on a plane and heading back to her soft, gentle life then I had already lost her. “What am I meant to do? Jump on the next flight and go and bring her home? She’s made her decision.” I ducked instinctively as Maggie moved towards me. But this time she didn’t hit me upside the head, she just stared up at me with her hands on her hips.
“If that’s what it takes, yes but...” She froze, shooting a half panicked look behind her at Fang who was shaking his head.
Something was going on. Something to do with Darcie. And it was something they didn’t want to tell me. “‘What’s going on?” I let my eyes flick to each person in the room in turn and every single one of them looked away first.
“Havoc.”
“No, tell me what the hell is going on?” My voice was rising. “Where is Darcie?”
“Just tell him,” Maggie’s hand came down onto my arm, her fingers squeezing gently. “He needs to know.”
“Tell me what?” I turned away from her, coming to face Fang fully. I tried to keep my voice strong but there was no mistaking the hitch to it. “Where the hell is Darcie?”
“A ticket with her name on it was bought by your brother.”
My heart slammed into my throat. “She went back to him?” I almost yelled. After everything that had happened, I hadn’t been expecting that. I had thought she had more self-dignity than to go back to a lying cheat of a man who stole from the mob and put her in danger. Even if she didn’t want to be with me, I had never expected her to go back to him.
“No, yes. Liam, listen and use your brain. When I spoke to her on the phone she was with him…don’t interrupt me.” Maggie glared. “But she sounded strange and Lucas was acting shady as well. I mean when does that boy ever pick up his phone to me?” She didn’t wait for an answer. “He doesn’t. So why did he do it now unless it was so I could know Darcie was with him? He wanted that seed planted.”
She might have a point but I couldn’t shake the nagging feeling that Darcie had gone back to him.
“So they are heading back to England together?”
“There was only one ticket bought, in her name.” Fang carried on. “Not two. One. Lucas is still in the country and Darcie…”
“Darcie is gone,” I mumbled numbly.
“Darcie never got on the plane, Havoc. She’s still here as well.”
“Then where?” I searched the room like she would appear like magic out of thin air. “Where the hell is she?”
“No one knows Havoc. The last time she was seen, Lucas was helping her out of the cafe because she felt sick. That’s what the barista said. After that, no one has seen her.”
I let Fang’s words sink in. “Where is she?” The arm Maggie was holding tensed. My hand closing into a fist and then releasing. “Where is my brother?” If I found out that Lucas had something to do with this I would kill him. If he had hurt her? I shook the thought away. He wouldn’t. My little brother was many things but Darcie was the woman he wanted to spend his life with at one point. Surely he wouldn’t put her in danger just to save his own skin?
But honestly, I already knew the answer. Lucas would skin his own mother to save himself.
“Has anyone seen my brother?”
“I’ve called Cyber back, you know how good he is at snooping around online. That guy can hack anyone. I’m hoping Lucas...”
I cut Fang off. “I thought Cyber was on a run? We don’t have time to wait for him. If Darcie...” I shook my head.
“Havoc she might be perfectly safe, it could be innocent.”
Innocent? I scowled at him. At best Darcie was holed up with my no-good brother somewhere and he was touching what belonged to me, and at worst he had led her into some sort of trap. Neither of those scenarios were innocent though.
“I need to find her.” I made a move towards the door and again it was Maggie who stopped me. “Sit down Havoc. I already have someone hunting Lucas down.”
Blinking at her, I saw the sadness in her eyes. “Who?” I didn’t need her to answer though because I already knew. “You phoned the Judge didn’t you?” I didn’t know how much it had cost her to send that monster after her own grandchild but it was a lot. I could see it in her eyes. “He works for the family, why would he help us?”
She shrugged her bony shoulders. “He owes me a favour, a very big favour. I called it in. Plus...” A watery smile flickered across her face. “Plus he actually likes Darcie. He thinks she has balls.” Her eyes narrowed. “He also thinks she is too good for you and I can’t say I blame him for the way you have been acting. Either way, he will find Lucas and bring him back here. I’ve told him not to touch him though.”
“If he’s hurt her…” I let the words trail off if he had hurt her I would not be able to control myself.
Maggie’s eyes shone with tears. “I know Havoc, I know. But I will cross that bridge when I come to it. Our only priority right now needs to be making sure that woman of yours is safe.”
