Maggie’s eyes softened. “Most probably. Like I said he cares for you. He won’t let you put yourself in danger.”
“But it’s not his problem, Maggie. It’s mine. Well, Lucas’, but I was the one engaged to him. I couldn’t live with myself if something happened to Havoc.” I felt lighter getting it off my chest. “I would rather smuggle the diamonds, or whatever. Customs won’t look at me twice.”
Something in Maggie’s face shifted. Her lips thinned. “Diamonds?” she shook her head, trying to school her face back into a grin. But I had seen the look of disgust that had flickered across it. “No wonder he won’t let you be involved.”
“I just feel like it would be safer for me to...”
She cut me off, her hand coming down on my arm and squeezing. “No.” Her voice was sharp. “No Darcie, this time I am going to say let Havoc deal with this. It’s man’s business, us women shouldn’t get involved.” She lapsed into thoughtful silence. “The club is ok with this?”
I shook my head. “Havoc said something about having to keep this quiet from Fang.” I searched her face. “That’s bad isn’t it?”
For a second she didn’t answer and then she shook her head. “It’s fine, everything will be fine.”
She was lying to me, just like her grandson.
There were so many secrets. All of them seemed to involve me but no one was willing to tell me anything.
“Maggie please don’t lie to me as well, I can’t stand it.”
The smile that spread across her face was dazzling. Dazzling and fake. “No one is lying to you, Darcie. We have no right to ask about club business. Sometimes they don’t tell us things to keep us safe. It’s best if you don’t ask questions.”
Club business? We had just discussed how the club knew nothing about any of this, so how was it suddenly club business?
“Ok.” If they could all lie to me then I could sure as hell do it back to them.
Maggie shot me a look. “Havoc cares about you Darcie, if he didn’t he would not be doing what they asked him to do. Don’t do anything stupid and ruin things ok?”
***
“Havoc,” I called softly to him as I poked my head around the bedroom door. His back was to me, his shoulders hunched as he spoke into the phone at his ear.
Whoever was on the other end of the line wasn’t saying anything he particularly wanted to hear. But when he turned, dropping his phone to the bed, he was smiling. The wide panty-dropping smile of the Havoc I had first met. Had it really been less than two weeks ago?
“Sorry baby.” He crossed the space between us easily. “Had to take that call. I saw you and Maggie chatting, everything ok?” Something like worry flickered into his eyes. But as quickly as it appeared it was gone.
“Everything’s fine.” I lied easily as he wrapped me in his arms. “I was telling her how much I like it here. It’s so peaceful.”
“We can come back whenever you like.”
“Who was on the phone?” I knew he wouldn’t tell me but I wanted to ask anyway.
“No one important.” Tilting my chin up he kissed my lips softly. “But we do have to leave today. I have some business to sort out.”
The anger I had been holding onto in the two days we had been here erupted. Tearing myself out of his grasp, I turned my back on him.
“Darcie?”
“Stop fucking lying to me.” Whirling back I glared at him. His eyes were half shut, his mouth in a thin line as he stared back at me. But when he spoke his voice was neutral. Like I was some sort of wild animal he was afraid of spooking.
“I’m not lying to you, Darcie. Why would I?”
“I don’t know why, but you are”
“Baby, if this is about wanting you because of my brother then…”
“Fuck off Havoc, you know that isn’t what I’m talking about.”
His face shut down completely. A steeliness seeped over his features, making them hard and cold. “Then what is this about? Because I won’t tell you the ins and outs of my fucking life? I’m not the sharing type Darcie, my life, my decisions. You don’t get a say in what I do.”
