Rain blinked his eyes at me and asked, “You gave Quanto Diego stipulations?”
“Yeah, that is either brave to the point of stupidity or it means that you are nuts.” Henry nodded.
“I can see how someone would think that,” I agreed. “But I hoped that what I had been told about him would pan out. I told him I only killed if it was on equal terms. Like if my opponent had a weapon. As in, I refused to murder anyone.”
“Oh, mercy!” Henry exclaimed.
“And he agreed to that?” Rain asked me in an incredulous tone.
“After I explained my promise to my madre on her deathbed that I would never commit that sin. I could defend my life but I could not murder anyone in cold blood as that is an ultimate sin in God’s eyes.”
“Ohhh,” Carlos finally spoke. “That’s how you convinced him.”
“Very clever,” Rain complimented me.
Looking confused, Henry looked back and forth at us. “Explain.”
“Quanto's mother made him promise several things on her deathbed as well,” Carlos explained.
I nodded. “So that one was agreed to.”
“Then the second one?” Carlos asked.
“I told him that I was a wizard in investments and if I made him at least 10 million, I could one day ask him for one favor. One that he could not refuse. He at first, didn’t really believe me, so I invested for a few months and tripled his money. After that, he promised on his madre’s soul that he would concede to my second stipulation.”
“Well, fuck,” Carlos whispered in awe.
“And has he made that much?” Henry asked.
I nodded. “Twenty million so far.”
All three men couldn’t hide their astonishment.
“Blin, you should be called Miss Midas,” Rain stated with a laugh.
“Or Miss Swabb at the very least,” Henry said.
“So what are you going to ask for?” Carlos asked me.
I raised my gaze to meet his.
Carlos studied my face then he looked stunned as he gasped. “Your ticket out!” He guessed.
Henry agreed, “To let you walk away instead of leaving toes up, as it were.”
“Clever, Ms. Vargas.” Rain gave me a nod of his head. “Very clever.”
I didn’t bother to correct him about my real name being Gomez. Why tell him? Only Carlos and I knew the truth of that. “I haven't asked him yet,” I told him. “So save your compliment, Mr. Rainmaker.”
Chapter Fourteen:A Couple
Carlos
Amazing. The woman was nothing short of amazing. I could see that my two friends thought so too. Good. I would not be explaining why I wanted her by my side. I did not have to. These two men weren’t stupid. Even if they acted stupid when they argued. I had to admit, I forgot how funny they were in their semi-competition fights. The Sir jokes alone made me laugh so hard my gut hurt.
Selena now seemed to relax a bit around them. She always had this edge to her, but being an operative of the Diego’s that was understandable. I now tuned into the conversation they were all having.
“We need to plan an itinerary,” Rain said. “Plane, rental car, and hotel rooms.”
