I grunt. “Sure. Sure.”

She smiles sadly. “I’ll miss the house too. But we’ll always have the memories together. Don’t forget that.”

“Thanks, Mom.”

She pats my arm. “Do something nice for yourself today, Chase, huh? Take some time off, maybe go out on the lake? There’s got to be something you’ve been putting off.”

“Sure,” I say with a nod. “I will.”

She drives away, disappearing around the bend, and I’m left standing alone in the shade. There’s a hell of a lot I need to process, but Mom’s advice lingers, and I turn my eyes to the house across the water.

Thereissomething I want to do, and with my world already turned upside down, I don’t see what the harm is in not putting it off any longer.
