After a couple hours, I even caught Noah and Jet laughing together, both resting near the conference table. The way their eyes lit up, I could see their relation, even more clearly than usual.
Night falling outside, I sat on my desk, phone in hand while I answered some urgent emails that I’d neglected, but my mind was still distracted by the brothers. Noah respected focus and hard work, so I was especially glad that he could see this side of Jet. But it dawned on me that Jet’s laidback attitude, the way he joked around and was always looking for fun, that was good for Noah, too.
I shook my head, then shoved my phone in my pocket. Most of the employees had gone home, and considering how exhausted I was, it seemed time to call it a night. I found Jet, huffing as he emerged from the staircase, his shirt and forehead damp with sweat.
“You’re literally a superhero to the office right now,” I told him. “Do you realize that?”
Jet flexed his bicep, then winked at me. “I can’t imagine what you’re talking about.”
I laughed, tearing my eyes away before he got to me and I started acting obvious. Noah walked up, and I saw that he’d put his collared shirt back on and that his briefcase hung from his hand.
“Calling it a night?” I asked.
“Yeah.” Noah squinted slightly, casting his eyes between us like he was considering something, then spoke. “There’s a pizza spot on the block that’s pretty decent. Jet, can I get you dinner, say thanks?” He looked back to me. “Maybe Peyton will join us, too?”
“Yeah,” Jet answered eagerly, barely giving me time to process the question. “Sounds great.”
“Yeah,” I answered, then gave Noah a big smile. “Let me just grab a couple things from my office.”
