Right then, Noah shot his hand in the air. “Hey!” he called out, then turned to me. “My partner at the firm is here. Let me introduce you.”

I looked up, and my heart jumped in my throat when I saw Peyton walking our way. He had an awkward smile on his face, and it was obvious he was headed straight toward me.

Oh shit. Peyton was going to say hi at the exact same time Noah introduced me to his partner at the firm. This was a fucking disaster.

Involuntarily, I started to shake my head no, which caused Peyton’s eyes to pop up in surprise. I turned to Noah, who still smiled and waved, looking straight at Peyton.

Peyton. Noah. Looking at each other.

It took me a full second to process that, and by the time it all landed, Peyton was there, standing between us.

No fucking way.

“Alastair,” Noah said, then shook his head. “I mean, Jet, this is Peyton. Peyton, meet my brother.”
