I snorted and remembered Leo freaking out all week about his vows. “Okay, you win. There’s obviously a lot of pressure.”

“Less pressure with two couples, though.”

“Cass’s one demand as a groom is that the weekend isn’t fancy or expensive, so they went with a laidback wilderness vibe. Anyway, I don’t need to worry about wedding stress of my own anytime soon, considering I relied on a last-minute save from an old childhood friend to even get myself a date.”

“Same. My own wedding is still pretty far in the future. I keep telling myself I’m going to get out and do stuff around town more, meet some new people, but you know how it goes.”

“Work and adulting take up the whole day,” I agreed. “I’m glad to get out of town for the weekend.”

“Me, too. And accompanying the brother of a groom, can you believe it?”

“Brother and best man,” I laughed. “It’s that kind of double wedding.”

“Who are you the best man for?”

“Leo and River.”

“Are there best men on the other side?”

“Everyone has a few friends standing, but Leo is the best man.”

“For who?”

“Shawn and Cass.”

Izzy’s laugh sang out. “That’s cute.”

“It is,” I agreed. “And I have lots of experience standing silently next to Leo at work, so I don’t even have to practice.”

Izzy sat up and peered outside. “The Susquehannock Forest are even bigger than I remember.”

“Yeah, will you pull up the map? I thought we’d be getting to the road by now.” Since we’d left the highway, the traffic had slowed significantly, and we were emerging into a taller forest with old giants of trees.

“Oh, shoot.”

I smiled at the word, shootseeming so cute to me. “What’s up?”

Izzy dropped his phone. “Good news and bad news. I just noticed your Instagram already has some good likes going.”

“Oh, cool.”

“But we’re two hours off course.”

“Oh,” I answered. “Shoot.”

Chapter Seven

Izzy

All of a sudden,I had two big problems on my hands.

First, I was about to arrive to the gathering before the wedding in shorts that were cut from an old pair of jeans and a botany T-shirt. With no time to stop off at the cabin, I was going straight from road trip to meeting the crowd.

Even more urgent than that, though, I was fast developing a crush on Kai. He talked with this even, steady tone, and I just wanted to crawl into the rhythm of his voice. His expression was always so earnest. It was sweet and strong at the same time, and when he caught my gaze and held me in his dark eyes, lightning crashed through my body.

He was steady, and something about that was hot to me. The kind of hot that made me think about unbuttoning his collared shirt, and running my fingers through his neatly combed hair, and tasting the cologne on his neck.

My heart wanted to go at rocket speed, even as my brain screamed no.
