“Not at all, dear lady. I will beg the privilege of calling on you tomorrow, to make certain you are well,” the earl responded.

“That won’t be necessary,” Fanny told him. “I am well.”

Something flitted through the earl’s expression, as if he wanted to argue with her, something that sat poorly with Eli.

“The lady will wish to recuperate in peace,” Eli said, glaring at the man.

A condescending smile quickly replaced the ugly expression that had flickered in the earl’s countenance. It happened so fast Eli wondered if he had been mistaken.

“Of course,” Grimsley said with a bow. He hesitated a moment longer as if to follow them, before he surrendered and took his leave.

“About time,” Eli muttered, walking toward the exit with Fanny on his arm.

“Don’t be rude, Eli Benson. Grimsley was a perfect gentleman. I don’t know what I would have done without him,” she said.
