I glanced at Grant. From the warmth in his eyes, I could see that he had guessed. Or read my mind. “I’ll be starting my freshman year at Newman College on August twentieth.”

My mother clapped her hands. “Oh, sweetheart, that’s wonderful.”

Dad pushed out of his chair and came around the table to give me a hug. “You seem so much happier than you were about getting into Piedmont.”

“That’s because I am.” I glanced over at the Beings. Grant nodded with approval. Camarin’s smile was pleased.

“So tell us the details,” my dad said as he took his seat.

I filled them in as we ate dinner. I wouldn’t have to declare a major until the end of my sophomore year, so my fall classes would likely be the basics. The list of clubs and activities was overwhelming. I was allowed to have a car on campus. “And I’ll be living in the freshman residence hall.”

“Do you know what the rooms are like?” Mom asked.

“It’s a suite. Two bedrooms, two students in each, with a bathroom and living area to share. I’ll have an extra-long twin bed and a desk.”

I could tell that Mom was already planning a fashion extravaganza for my room. If I gave her free rein, it would be amazing. So, yeah, she could have it. “Will you come with me on move-in day and help me decorate?”

Her eyes brightened. “Do you want me to?”

“I’d love that.”

She glanced at my dad, and they both beamed. “We can’t wait,” she said.

My parents seemed really excited. First, my birthday. Now, my move-in day. Two rites of passage that my family was trying to survive together. We were going to get through this.

After supper, I decided it was time to tell Scott. Should I ask him to come over, or should I go over there?

No, face-to-face would be awkward if we were only friends and this relationship was just a convenience for the summer.

Of course, if Scott felt more than friendship, it might show in his expression. I’d miss that if we were chatting.

So which would be worse? Awkwardness or missing something important?

I texted him.

Newman admitted me

Scott responded immediately.

Great. Not surprised

Thanks

There was a pause. It was his turn, right?

Did you accept?

Yes. Today

What will you major in?

Don’t know. Maybe business. I’ll stay undecided until I figure it out

Sounds good

Something Sean had said to me echoed in my ears.If you’re in charge, it’ll succeed. My brother could be right. Maybe I just needed to learn the ins and outs of owning a small business, and worry later about what I loved enough to market.

I leave in 4 weeks
