“When you’re ready, Scott Fuentes would be amazing.”

“I agree, but I’m not sure that he’s available.”

“Uh-huh. So…” She swiped at her iPhone and narrowed her eyes at the screen. “I need a favor. I think.”

“Sure. What is it?”

“I want to get an apartment within walking distance of Magnolia Community College. Could you go with me to take a look?”

“Yes. When?”

“Now?”

“Sure. Can I bring Grant? He would pick up on more things than we could.”

“That would be great.”

We stopped by my house to get the genie. Kimberley brought in her iPad and set it up on the table. She opened a browser to the apartment rental website and pointed to an image of a building. “For the studio apartment I want, I have to apply by July first.”

“Excellent,” Grant said, sliding onto a seat next to her. “That is precisely what you need.”

“Thanks.” She sounded weary. “I wish everyone agreed with you.”

“Who doesn’t?” I asked.

Kimberley scrolled through the webpage until she reached the floorplan for a studio. “My mom isn’t sure I can handle it on my own.”

“She’s nearby. What does she think could go wrong?”

“We’re talking about me here, Sara. Lots of things can go wrong when I’m left alone for too long.”

I started to say more until I felt Grant’s hand on my shoulder. He shook his head and said, “How may we assist?”

“Go with me to this complex? It’s right across the street from campus. I’d like to see a model apartment.”

“Let’s go.”

Grant took over once we arrived at the complex. He studied the model apartment thoroughly, asking lots of question of the rental agent. Then he requested a look at several of the units becoming available. Kimberley walked at his side, her phone in her hand, RECORD on.

I tagged along, clearly just here as a chauffeur.

Although she didn’t give them a deposit, I could tell that Kimberley was pleased, and I could see why. It would be fine. If Mrs. Rey visited this place, she would see that too.

Kimberley offered to treat me and Grant to a drink in the student union. As we walked across campus, my phone buzzed. It was a text from Mason.

Have you seen Kimberley?

She’s with me

Where?

MCC

Where exactly?

Okay, this was weird. He was rarely so…insistent.
