Friday’s Wish: Catalog of Sean’s Computer

Dear Boss,

I fear for Sara’s reaction when she discovers the breadth of Sean’s activity online. Although his presence was not inappropriate, it was intriguingly varied. He had numerous friends who are unknown to her. I doubt that Sean deliberately hid these interests. Reserving a part of himself is a normal need, but it may unnerve her.

She understood him far better than we gave her credit, yet less well than she believed.

Regards,

Grant

Promising Questions

I received a text Saturday around noon from Scott.

Gotta minute?

Yes

I’m in front of your house

On the way

I went out the front door. His truck was parked on the street with Scott standing beside it, jaw set, hands jammed into his jeans pockets.

“Hey,” I said, stopping a few feet away.

“I overreacted, and I’m sorry.”

A long sigh slipped past my lips, expelling the distress of our argument. “Thank you.”

“I want to be a landscape architect, which requires a four-year degree. I’ll start at Magnolia Community College. I don’t know where I’ll go after that.” He stepped closer, taking off his shades. “Are we good again?”

“We were nevernotgood.”

“Okay, then.” He looked around hesitantly, as if unsure what came next.

“Do you have somewhere you need to be?”

He glanced at his watch. “In an hour.”

“The house has a showing soon, so I’d planned to hang out at Mom’s shop until my shift starts. Want to meet me at The Java Corner for a cup of coffee first?”

The warmth of his smile wrapped around me like a hug. “Sure.”

“See you there.”

Scott was already seated at a small table with two mugs of coffee. I pulled out the chair next to him, waved at Mason, and glanced at the leather couch by the fireplace. Kimberley stared back at me, her eyes promising questions later.

I accepted my mug. “Thanks.”

He nodded. “When do you have to be at the shop?”

“Not until later this afternoon. I’m mostly taking the shifts that nobody else wants.” I paused to sip my coffee. Were we friendly enough for me to be nosy? I was going with yes. “Grant and I were downtown on Monday afternoon. We saw you with Monica.”

Scott stiffened, his chin lifted in warning. “Do you have a question in there somewhere?”
