“If they are female, yes. It would be inappropriate for me to refer to a master or mistress by their given name.”
“Then we’re done. I won’t answer unless you call me Sara.”
An intensely quiet moment passed. “If that is your requirement, I shall make an exception.” He set my phone on the bed beside me. “Had you finished your conversation?”
I squinted at the screen. Another text awaited me from Lacey.
Are you there?
I rolled to my side and picked up the phone.
Yeah, still here
Are you ok?
I stole a glance at Grant.
Not sure yet. Why didn’t you warn me?
You would’ve thought I was joking
I would’ve thought she was crazy, but he was kind of hard to deny in person.
If my brother knew, why didn’t he tell me?
It seemed best this way
Does Eli know?
Just you, me, Kimberley, and Sean. No one else
K. We’ll talk later
A fuzzy memory floated in my brain, slowly crystallizing. My brother had been lying in his hospital bed in the sunroom with Kimberley sitting at his side, holding his hand. They were laughing and talking. I’d felt envious. Excluded.
At the opposite side of the sunroom, Grant had stood guard over them, and he hadn’t been alone. “Camarin?”
Grant nodded gravely.
She had the same green eyes. “Camarin is a genie.”
“She is a supernatural being, but she has never served in the capacity of a genie. Her assignments are more subtle.”
Subtle? Like bossing around a cancer patient? Feeding him junk?
Here is your supper, Sean.
Thanks, Camarin. Creamed potatoes and peach pie!
Truly, how could I not take the hint after the third time you mentioned them?
I’d been so frustrated whenever she did that. Healthy food might have given him an extra day. An extra hour. An extra—
Wow. She’d been spoiling him, because... “She knew there wasn’t much time left.”
“Yes.”
I pushed that knowledge into a corner of my heart, not able to ponder it yet. It was better to stick to unemotional topics. “Do you still hang out with her?”
