His skin was pale and stained with old blood. He wore a thin blue gown and was covered with a white blanket. The IV linesand tubes were like spider webs covering his body. I looked over at the monitor that insisted he was still alive, but it didn’t look like it. "Cane," I said as I cautiously walked toward him. There was no response, just his steady heartbeat.
I sat in the chair beside his bed, then pulled his hand into mine. “I’m sorry, Cane. I’m so fucking sorry.” I cried. There was no response, not even a change in his heartbeat. It felt like he was gone already. For a minute, I wondered if that was for the best.
I was experiencing the most uncomfortable sleep in the fucking world when I heard low groans from Cane. “Baby,” I said as I pulled my seat closer to him. I pulled his hand into mine. “I’m here,” I said as tears poured down my face. He tried to sit up, but I stopped him with a hand to his chest. “Stay still, Cane, let me go get a doctor,” I said.
“Snow!” he groaned as he struggled to open his eyes.
“No nigga it’s your fucking wife!” I snapped.
Hearing my voice triggered him because he immediately started fighting against his weak body. He tried to sit up again, but I pushed him back, this time with a little more force. I could tell that caused him pain. I could see it too. The blood, which was a speck, spread quickly. I grabbed the sheets from his legs and pressed them against his chest.
“Where is Snow? Did you shoot her, too?”
“You need to relax,” I said.
He refused. He just kept calling her name like she was his fucking wife. Instead of calling someone right away, I decided to wait until he was closer to death. Unfortunately, the monitors alerted someone their self.
Before I knew it, doctors and nurses filled the room. White and blue scrubs knocked past me just to get to him. “I'm going to need you to step into the hallway,” a nurse said.
"Is he dying?” I asked.
“They are trying to prevent that.” She said as she ushered me toward the door. “But you don’t need to see this part.” She said.
“Ok,” I said. I stood outside his room and waited for the time of death to be called.
Chapter 31
Snow
Since the night I was kicked out of the hospital, I had been lying in bed. I was both sick and emotionally drained. It’s funny because for weeks I fought with Cane about being here, but now I didn’t want to be anywhere else. There was a subtle knock at the door. “Come in,” I said.
I wanted it to be Cane standing there, but unfortunately, it was his wife.
“Hey,” she said as she slipped into the room. “I just wanted to apologize for pushing you away the other night. I just felt like that was a time for just family to be there.”
“It’s ok,” I said. It was true, I wasn’t his family, I was just carrying it. “Do you mind telling me what happened?”
“Do you really want to know?”
“Yes.”
“Well, when I told Cane I wanted to leave, he pulled a gun on me.” She said. I could see her emotions getting the best of her as tears began to fill her eyes. “He refused to let me go. One thing led to another, and I shot him.”
“Wow,” I said as I took in her words. He made it seem like he didn’t even want her, but when she was ready to walk away, he wouldn’t let her. The nigga was greedy.
“I only wanted to leave Snow. I never wanted to kill him.”
“Wait, he’s dead?” I asked.
She nodded.
I held my stomach as the small cramps I’d been feeling all day turned into a contraction. I hobbled over in pain as I held my stomach.
“Are you ok?” Olivia asked.
“No,” I cried. “I need a hospital,” I said as I felt a warmth trickle down my leg. I wasn’t sure what it was. It could be pee, blood, or my water breaking.
“Ok,” she said as she held my arm. I was surprised at how gentle she was. She seemed like the type to kick me while I was down.
