“It’s okay to be sad, just remember God gives you exactly what you need when you need it.” She paused, then looked over at her son. “That includes a husband.”
“I know.” I sighed. Of course, she was going to lead me into a conversation about him.
“Do you? Because my son does not belong to you.”
“I know,” I said again. I really didn’t want to argue with her over her son. I had my own to worry about now. But of course, she kept speaking as if I had asked her to. “God is not going to give you someone else’s husband, and if you take it, you’ll reap what you sow.” She said. Her words sent chills down my spine. It sounded like she was putting a curse on me.
“I know! I fucking know! I’m not trying to take someone’s husband. I’m trying with every fucking part of me that loves him to stay away, but. .”
“But he loves you too.”
“Exactly. So, talk to your son! He’s the one who’s married.”
“Dinner.” I heard Cane call.
I dismissed myself from the conversation and headed to the house. I was getting tired of being the problem.
“So do you have any baby names in mind?” Imani asked. I wanted to tell her that we didn’t talk about the babies in front of Olivia. But I knew that would do nothing for Imani. She was still going to boast about her god babies.
“Nope,” I said as I reached for the sugar. I sprinkled a little on top of my mashed potatoes. Lately, I’ve been craving sweets like crazy. I could barely eat anything without drizzling a little sugar on it.
“Fall and Winter are cute names. I like the name Ornament too.”
“Ornament.” I frowned.
She laughed. “It’s unique.”
“A little too unique.” I giggled.
“I want our first son to have my name.”
“I’m not giving you a junior,” I said.
“Why?”
“Cane, you have to leave something for your wife!”
“Exactly!” Olivia said as she got up from the table.
“Go after her,” I said.
“Fuck her!”
“Maybe you should.”
“You know who this dick belongs to. Stop playing.”
“Cane!” His mother yelled.
Imani busted out laughing.
“Yeah, her. Now go be a husband.” Instead of going after Olivia, he started eating his food.
I shook my head and pushed my plate away. “I just lost my appetite.” I didn’t like Olivia, but
All I could think about was that it could be me. Hell, that was me.
“Y’all leave the table, let me talk to Snow.”
