I shrugged.
“Yeah, Snow. You got me fucked up. I’m not going to let being married take away from our family.”
“We aren’t a family, and we never will be.”
“That’s fine, Snow, but whether you like it or not, I’m going to be there for my children. So, if that means I have to get a divorce,I will. And if I have to stop fucking you, I will. Because before I wanted you, I wanted them. And they will always come first.”
“Ok, well, let’s just keep this platonic,” I mumbled as I grabbed my clothes.
“You ready to go home?”
I nodded, but I’m still not ok with you being married.”
“Don’t be.” He said as we headed out of the bathroom.
“Get your stuff.” He said as he pointed to my bag that lay beside the couch. “Matter a fact, leave that shit here, it probably got roaches all in that bitch.”
I rolled my eyes. “Let me turn the oven off and tell Imani goodbye.”
“Oh shit, I forgot about her.” He said as he walked to the hall closet. He moved the chair that leaned against the door, then opened it. Imani stumbled out of it along with the broom and mop.
“Cane!” I yelled. “I know you didn’t lock her in there.”
“Well, she shouldn’t have been so quick to lie for you. Talking about you ain’t here, but the apple tag I put in your purse is pinging from here. She had me fucked up.”
“You didn’t have to put her in the closet!”
“And you didn’t have to sign me up for the army!”
Imani and I both started laughing. He was mad now, but I knew he was going to be pissed when the marriage counselor and the Jehovah's Witnesses started calling.
“You and that crazy nigga got to go!” Imani said as she opened the front door.
“Fine with me.” Cane chuckled as he grabbed my hand.

I was kind of glad to be back at our place. It felt like home. He felt at home. And I felt so damn guilty because I knew a woman was waiting for him at his actual home.
I sat on the couch as I watched Cane paint my belly. I felt like my stomach wasn’t big enough for it, but that didn’t stop Cane from trying. He was so happy and focused. For a minute, I thought he could actually paint. He couldn’t.
Paint was all over the place, and the pumpkin looked horrible. But he was proud of himself. He ended up doing a whole maternity shoot for me.
“You are so beautiful.” He said as he snapped pictures on his phone. Then he set the phone up so we could take some together in the orange and black PJs he bought us.
I had my head against his chest while he had his hands cradling my stomach. We took a bunch of pictures. Somehow, I ended up on top of him, taking pictures with his hand on my stomach. And this is why it took no time for me to fall for him, because every moment with him was thoughtful. I never had anyone love me like this, not even Royal. But still, I couldn’t get over that he wasn’t mine.
Chapter 23
Snow
1 week later,
“You still mad at me?” Cane asked.
“Nope.”
“So why can’t you look at me?”
