“I don’t know. I was just so used to surviving.”
“And now it’s time to live.” He said as he wiped my tears.
“Thank you,” I said.
He kissed my forehead, then my belly. “I’ll see you later.”
Chapter 16
Cane: Happy 12 weeks. The twins are the size of a plum this week.
Attached was an email confirmation for a plum-colored Birkin
Me: A Birkin Cane? Now that’s too much
Cane: just say thank you
Me: Thank you
“Snow!” my mother yelled.
“Hey, ma,” I said as I walked into the living room.
“Hey, baby, I want you to meet my friend Jim.” She said as she rubbed at the raw spot at the center of her arm.
“Um, hello,” I said.
“God, you’re beautiful,” the man said.
“I told you,” My mother said.
I watched as the man handed her a twenty-dollar bill.
“What’s going on?” I asked.
“I need you to do me a favor. Well, Jim, a favor.”
“What kind of fucking favor?” I snapped.
“He just wants you to suck it for a little.”
“Suck what?” I asked because I knew damn well she wasn’t talking about his fucking dick.
“Snow, don’t act all innocent now. I heard you last night. You know exactly what he wants you to suck!”
“Hell no,” I said.
“Why not? As many men as you had running in and out of here since you’ve been back, why can’t you do this for your momma?”
“I said no! Actually, Hell mother fucking no!” I said. I went back into my room, I grabbed my phone and keys to the bakery, then stormed out of the apartment.
“Snow!” my mother called.
I looked back, hoping she realized she had made a mistake. “Don't come back!”

I let myself into the bakery. My body was trembling with hurt and rage. Tears rolled down my face as I turned the oven on and grabbed a mixing bowl. I was hurt because my mother had never put me in a situation like that. She never asked me to give any part of my body away for drugs. Yeah, my shoes would be missing, and sometimes I had to skip dinner, but my body was always safe. I wondered what changed. Why tonight? Had she asked me for the money, I would have probably given it to her.
