Ore wondered what else Chuck had done. And who was ‘all of us?’ Did Agatha realise that even if she wasn’t named, Chuck would soon work out who had leaked those statements. Ore found herself hoping that Agatha would find the strength to leave and resolved to get in touch with her to help her put together an exit strategy, the moment she was off this boat.
The revelation about Henry left Ore shocked, but she found she wasn’t surprised; at least it explained his strange behaviour on the phone. She was also glad that he had cut her off before she went into too much detail about what she’d found out. Although even what she had said could put her in danger. She just had to hope that Henry wouldn’t relay it all back to Chuck before she was back on dry land and out of his clutches.
She was deep in thought when Carlos burst in. His eyes were red and swollen but he smiled broadly when he saw Ore.
‘Oh hello, how are you, darling? I am so sorry about breakfast. I got caught up with …’ He looked down at his feet solemnly but the smile was back in place by the time he looked up again.
‘It’s OK, Carlos, I was just seeing if there was anything I could scavenge,’ Ore admitted.
‘Did you find anything?’ Carlos asked, busying himself with an apron.
‘Lots more than I expected,’ Ore said.
‘Great, then you don’t need me to cook you anything?’
‘No, thanks though.’ Ore made to leave and then had the urge to turn and say, ‘Also thanks for your advice, about Daniel.’ She smiled.
‘I am glad that you and the captain have found each other; now you are out of your cages, you can fly freely, and side by side.’
As usual, Ore didn’t entirely understand Carlos’ metaphors but it sounded nice, getting out of the cage. Side by side though, that would be harder. She had no idea what would happen in five days’ time, when they docked in Sydney … She shook the thought from her mind. She was planning on living in the moment until then.
