Daniel was lucky this was a temporary gig for him; soon he’d be with the Hartfords, and he could leave all this behind.
‘I’m really sorry, Carlos. Might I recommend you look for another job?’ Daniel couldn’t understand why anyone would stay working for Chuck.
‘Pah, I would, but Chuck won’t let anyone leave until he wants them gone; as I said, he is not afraid of giving a bad reference.’ Carlos shook his head, defeated by his own indictment of the situation.
‘There is always a way out, Carlos. A wise man once told me something about things not always needing to be like they’ve always been, and how when they’re not you need to change … or something like that.’
Carlos looked up, and both men laughed softly. ‘Well maybe this is my first step, of doing something different, to tell you, to break the silence. I trust that you will do the right thing with this information.’
Daniel was touched, if a little wary of the responsibility. ‘I will try.’
‘You do that, Capitaine, and in the meantime I’ve got lunchto make.’ Carlos pulled himself to his feet and slapped Daniel on the back on his way out. It was the first time Daniel had seen Carlos look his age.
