“It has,” I agree.

“I heard you opened a gallery.”

I nod. “I did.”

“Your dad was really proud of you. Bragged about you all the time. It’s too bad you stopped coming around.”

A knot forms in my stomach at the mere mention of him.

“I know. A lot’s changed since we were kids.”

“That it has.” There is a wistful undertone in his reply.

James delivers the ice-cold beers, and Damon jumps to take a gulp. I won’t tell a lie and say this impromptu double date isn’t awkward.

“What kind of gallery?” Kira inquires.

“It’s a multifunctional space. I rent it out when I can to other creative professionals like photographers and artists, but mostly I host exhibits. I have this huge photographer coming next weekend to showcase his fall collection. If it goes well, it could really put my gallery on the map.”

“Oh, that sounds exciting. I would love to check it out.”

“You are more than welcome to come. I would love to have you there.” I speak to both Ky and Kira.

“We wouldn’t miss it,” Ky eagerly accepts. “How far does that invite extend?” He glances at Damon.

“To everyone at the table. We’re all friends.”

“Friends.” He tips his bottle with an underline of annoyance. He doesn’t like being just “friends.” But that’s the way it has to be. I can’t compromise my emotions. No matter how attracted I am to him. No matter how much I want him. No matter how much I care about him. I just can’t bet against the house with terrible odds. You always lose.

I’ve been taught that my whole life.

Feeling the energy at the table shift, Ky spins the conversation. “So.” He puts his arm around Kira and gazes down at her in a way most women only dream about. Even I’m feeling a bit green with envy. “Are you going to hit the casino floor with us tonight?”

“Do I get to play?” She perks up.

“Play?” Ky gives her a worried look. “I was kind of just hoping you would hang out next to me and make me look good.”

Kira is outright insulted. “You’re a dick.”

Ky laughs, completely taken with her response. “I’m just kidding. I know my father has been teaching you tricks. We can see how you handle yourself under pressure.”

“If you haven’t noticed by now, pretty well.” Kira picks up her glass and takes a haughty sip of prosecco.

“I’ve definitely noticed.” Ky touches his head to hers, and it’s so sweet I might just throw up cotton candy.

Damon and I sit next to each other awkwardly as the couple across from us oozes adoration all over the table.

“What do you think, Liv? Should we give these guys a run for their money at the poker table?” Kira asks with an edge.

“She’s more a blackjack kind of girl,” Damon tosses that tidbit into the mix.

“Oh?” Kira’s face lights up.

“It’s true,” I confirm.

“Can we play? We can leave these two to their own devices.” Kira is quick to abandon Ky.

I raise a conspiratorial eyebrow. “Girls’ night continued?”
