Detach my energy from her body? I didn’t even know my energy was attached to her body.
Mrs. Reebus knelt beside me then. “You’re physically holding her, right?” she asked.
Pain rolled through me as my curse continued activating, but at the same time, my healing powers were working to dull it, or I’d have passed out by now.
I nodded.
“Look. See her energy? It’s faint, but it’s there. Attach to that and follow the pull,” she coached.
“Y-yes exactly,” Master Hart wheezed.
My muscles were twitching. My skin felt like it was on fire, but I tried to calm myself and relax my vision so I could see the queen’s energy.
As I stared, a faint glow rose off her body about two inches, very small and very weak, and little wispy cords from my hands floated over the top of her energy like tentacles.
“I see something weird. Like strings from my hands,” I said.
“Yes! Hook in! Hook those into her energy and follow the pull. Save her,” Mrs. Reebus coached.
I whimpered as another rush of pain washed over me, and then suddenly, I felt the cool balm of healing I normally felt with Ariyon.
I whipped my head around to see Hayes with his hands hovering over my shoulder blades. “I got you,” he said firmly. He couldn’t save the queen, but he could help me save her, and for that I was extremely grateful.
Feeling stronger, I looked back at the queen and willed the little energy tentacles to hook into her soul but not her body. The tug was so strong, I yelped.
My eyes slammed shut, and then the tug at my navel was so forceful, I was spinning. One second, I was in the school garden, and the next, I stood before the Grim himself.
Oh fae.
TEN
ARIYON
I limped down the hallway with Maze prodding me in the back every few minutes. I’d just gotten beaten up pretty badly, but I’d held my own and ended up winning by forfeit. As I passed the main break room where all the guards hung out, I overheard a familiar voice.
Marissa.
That woman spent way more time here than I liked. I wanted to get away from her as fast as I could, but when I heard Fallon’s name on her lips, I went rigid and skidded to a stop.
“Fallon wasn’t there. Well, she was. I felt her, but I couldn’t get to her,” Marissa growled.
Amethyst tsked. “You need the girl. She’s the key to you getting the crown. Otherwise, you can’t give our people the permanent bodies we deserve.”
Whatthe faedid she just say? My entire body flushed with adrenaline.
Maze kicked the back of my knee, and I fell forward, splaying out my hands to catch my fall. I’d injured my wrist in the fight, so I hissed when I landed on it, fresh pain igniting there.
“Get up,” Maze growled.
“Bastard,” I shot back at him.
“I know that, but—” Marissa snarled.
“Don’t tell me Solana stopped you again,” Amethyst interjected.
My heart pounded wildly in my chest as I strained to hear her next words, taking my time to rise from the ground.
Marissa laughed shrilly. “No, I finally killed her. She’s with the Grim now and out of my way.”
