Jealousy rose up and speared my heart like a hot poker.
I was going to kill him.
She rolled her eyes, but grinned after she lowered her blade and took a step away from Drea. “Fine, but we have to report you were here and got away.”
“Understood. Can you wait until we’ve gone back to New York?”
The girl nodded, and the rest of the Shades backed off, stepping away and stowing their weapons. Drea looked at me and raised one eyebrow, but I shrugged.
“Let’s go,” Drea called to our crew and walked backward down the path. She wasn’t going to give her back to a bunch of Shades no matter how cool they were acting, and I didn’t blame her.
“Tatum, Dash, let’s fly,” Jacob called out.
Good idea. It would give us a good view of the entire cemetery and let us know if this was some bigger trap we were walking into.
I snapped my wings out behind me and looked at Gage, indicating with my head that he follow Drea, and then shot to the skies.
For old times’ sake? What the crap did that mean? Jerk.
I scanned the cemetery for demon portals, random Shades, or anything that seemed dangerous, but saw nothing, not even a mourning family member.
Jacob and Dash flew on either side of me as we watched Drea and the rest of the non-flying members of our party make it safely out of the cemetery. The sun was just starting to rise, and if I wasn’t on high alert for an ambush, I would have remained airborne and taken a moment to enjoy it. Instead I descended along with Jacob and Dash, and we landed on the cobblestone street right in front of the open gates.
“What was that? Shades guard cemeteries in London?” Drea growled. Her hair was a mess, and she had a small cut on her arm.
Gage nodded. “It’s common knowledge among the Lumens here that demons can’t go to cemeteries.”
“So the Shades in London patrol the cemeteries so Lumens can’t go there for respite?” Drea asked, sounding disgusted.
“That, and the Lumens that are looking for safety because they are tapped of energy or injured are often easy pickings.”
A look of hostility appeared on Drea’s face, clearly conveying what she thought of the London Shades.
“Do you really believe they will just let us pass and not alert anyone until we’ve gone back to New York?” Jacob asked Gage.
Gage chuckled. “No way, they’re probably running to call my father right now, but I’ve bought us some time. We’ll have to use another cemetery to return home. This one will be crawling with Shades within the hour.”
“Well, let’s move.” Drea started to walk away from the cemetery even though I was pretty sure she had no clue where we were going. The group followed and I moved next to Gage, shooting him a death glare.
“Old times’ sake, huh?” I snapped, scowling up at him.
Gage reached out and pulled me even closer, squishing my head against his chest. He laughed and the sound in his chest rumbled against my ear. “Jealous Tatum is sexy.”
I pulled back and smoothed my hair. “Not jealous.”Lie.“Just curious who that was.”
Gage slipped his hand in mine, lacing our fingers together, and it made it hard to concentrate on being mad at him.
“Hailey. She was my first kiss. I was twelve and visiting with my dad. It’s not a big deal.”
First kiss! That was like a super big memorable deal, but also not really a big deal since he clearly hadn’t seen her in years.
Gage was wrong. Jealous Tatum wasnota good look on me.
“Cool,” I breathed, and pushed Hailey and the image of Gage kissing her out of my mind. I’d let the idea of Gage with Claire get in our way before, and I wasn’t about to make that mistake a second time.
“What was with the moon staring thing?” I asked, dropping my voice so no one else could hear.
Gage’s face fell and then he released my hand. “Oh, a taxi!” he yelled and then flagged down an old-school black car that looked like it was from the early 1900s.
