She shrugged. “Then her future is still being written, but if you do…”

Death.

Not help? But that’s what we did. We were Lumens. It went against our nature to sit on the sidelines when someone was in need. Dash was family. So was Harley. We wanted to support them, especially if an innocent child was involved. But Skye had never been wrong about one of her premonitions before. Ever. I was living—and once dead—proof of that. Staying back while Harley and Dash went to Shade City without backup would kill me, but if going with them put Dash’s sister in jeopardy… I would let them go without us.

“Okay.” I swallowed hard and then told Drea what Skye had said.

Drea frowned but nodded. “Okay,” she said, looking dejected.

Our team leader was itching for a mission. I knew she would kick butt at this one, but we had to let it go. For now at least.

Harley crossed the room and stood before me awkwardly. She wasn’t a hugger, which is why I’d made her give Gage a hug after I died. I’d known she’d need one as much as him.

“Two days ago you were talking about looking for an apartment in New York,” I mumbled.

She said the city had grown on her, and the Angel Gang too. With her powers stripped, it wasn’t like she could go back to Shade City and take on her old role anyway.

She nodded. “I still want to do that. But I have to take care of this first.”

I shuffled my feet, making a fist and holding it out to her for a fist bump, but she knocked it out of the way and pulled me in for a hug. As her arms came around me, a lump formed in my throat and I wrapped her in a bone crunching hug.

“Ow,” she grumbled, and I grinned, pulling back from her.

“Text me every day,” I told her.

She nodded. “Have fun with lover boy.” She waggled her eyebrows.

I rolled my eyes and she looked back to glance at Drea. “You’re not so bad for a goody two-shoes angel girl.”

A smile pulled at Drea’s lips. “Neither are you. See you soon?”

Harley nodded and then left the room, presumably in search of Dash. When I spun to chew out Skye for keeping secrets from me, she was gone.

Typical Skye.

Even though she’d been given a mission to help Harley now, I knew that she’d be around. Skye was as much of a rule breaker as Aurum.

I spent the next hour finishing up packing and worrying about Harley and Dash. How could we just let them go into Shade City alone? Especially if some demons were hunting Dash’s poor little sister. I worried about it all the way to the airport and onto the plane.

“Earth to Tatum.” Gage waved a hand in front of my eyes and I looked up to see the first class air hostess smiling at me.

“Your drink.” She handed me a tall champagne flute, which was hilarious considering I ordered cranberry juice.

“Thanks,” I told her as I accepted the juice, and turned to Gage, who was holding his fancy fizzy water.

“Cheers to us.” He clicked my glass.

“To us.” I went to pull the glass to my lips and stopped when I noticed there was something inside.

What the…? Gross.

“Umm, ma’am?” I called after the flight attendant, but then lightly shook the glass and noticed what it was.

The flight attendant just winked at me as I turned to Gage with a slack jaw.

“It’s not an engagement ring or anything. I know we’re too young for that. But I wanted to make you a promise.” His voice was shaky and my heart hammered in my throat as I tipped the juice back and then stopped when the ring slipped between my teeth. Biting it lightly, I pulled it out and looked at it.

“Gage, it’s beautiful.” It was an aquamarine and diamond ring with six stones set in a shape that looked like a flower.
