‘Nope. And I found out I have a cool new fey power.’
‘Fey power!’he shrieked.
I chuckled.‘Tell you about it when I get home.’
“Back in time for dinner, what did I say?” Demi beamed, and slung an arm around my shoulders. I couldn’t help the high that came with knowing I’d actually killed a big baddie. My entire life at the society I was killing vampires left and right without really knowing which ones were true criminals. Morgana, on the other hand, she deserved it. The world was a better place without her in it.
We set out to find Pearl and Liv and Marmal with matching grins on our faces. When we finally reached them, they were sitting on Pearl and ready to go. Liv looked at me expectantly and I nodded, causing her to beam.
Morgana was down. Now we just needed to take care of Maz. She was the one I was really worried about. I knew Luka was strong—he was the king of the vampires—but if anything happened to him while he was carrying out a task for me, I would never forgive myself.
Chapter Twelve
“Nervous?”Luka asked as I stared out the window of our bedroom. It was Friday morning and we had to catch our plane to LA in a few hours.
I turned to him, smiling. “Not really, just antsy to get it over with,” I admitted.
He nodded and handed me his cell phone. “Milika texted. Everything is a go. The women and children are ready to flee, and I’ve got the maps we need.”
I glanced at his phone and nodded. “Good.”
“What’s wrong?” Luka asked.
I frowned, reaching out to stroke his bicep. “I have a bad feeling. I can’t shake it.”
He tipped his head up to look into my eyes. “Just one more night, then we can put all of this behind us. Soon, fey using breeders to make vampire hunters will only be in history books, and we can have our happily ever after.”
I chewed on my lip, unable to get this knot to unravel in my stomach. “I just hope it goes okay,” I told him. “Our wedding is in a few weeks. I just want to make it down that aisle and then onto the rest of that night.” I waggled my eyebrows.
He grinned like a fool. “I mean, if you’re afraid of dying a virgin, we can fix that problem right now.” He pulled me into a fireman’s carry and tossed me on our bed. Peals of laughter erupted from my chest as he lowered himself over me, grinning.
I smiled. “I love you.”
Leaning down, he kissed my nose. It was something he’d always done; it held such a tenderness that it made my throat constrict. “And I you, Aspen soon-to-be Drake. Don’t die, because I really want to have sex with you.”
I gave another burst of laughter and I smacked his chest. “And spend the rest of your immortal life with me.”
He nodded. “Having sex.”
My cheeks hurt from grinning, and I suddenly felt sad for anyone who had not experienced a love like this. A love so carefree and easy that laughing was second nature.
A knock came at the door and Luka pushed himself off of me, pulling me up with him as he went.
“Coming, Liv!” he yelled in annoyance.
Liv’s muffled voice came from behind the door: “How did you know it was me?”
“It’s always you.” Luka rolled his eyes playfully.
Did he just muttercockblockerunder his breath?
He opened the door and I whistled at my bestie’s getup. She was dressed in a short mini skirt and corset bodice. Her hair was pulled into two poufs, and she wore a smattering of glitter over her eyelids.
“Wow,” Luka said, dumbfounded.
I grinned. “King Constantine is going to love you. You sure you’re up for this?”
She tapped her ribcage. “Got some razor wire. If he gets out of control.” She drew a finger across her throat.
