Luka groaned then and I bolted upright, hovering over his face as my long red hair made a curtain around us.
His eyes were having trouble focusing as he reached up to touch my hair. “Is this heaven?” he asked.
I grinned, sighing in relief. “You scared me.”
He’d told me that compulsion had its consequences, but I hadn’t known almost dying was one of them.
He rolled onto his side and then sat up, straddling Pearl and holding on to my thighs to steady himself. Peering over the side, he looked at the three busses that were now retreating.
“Your mom get out?”
I nodded. “And half-sister and everyone else.”
He let out a whoop and pulled me in for a kiss, but I turned my head, giving him my cheek.
“Damn your morals, woman! I haven’t touched Carissa. I belong toyou,” he growled.
I belong to you.Four of the sexiest words I’d ever heard him say.
“You’re married,” I pressed.
Marmal raised an eyebrow, but said nothing. How embarrassing, she probably thought I was his mistress. I guess I kind of was, as much as I’d tried to avoid that.
“For now. But not for much longer,” he promised.
That was too vague for me. I wanted to throat punch him, but he’d probably fall off and break his neck.
I sighed, feeling fully depressed by the situation.
He pulled my chin up and forced me to look him in the eyes. “I haven’t touched her. I want you to know that.”
I raised one eyebrow. Yeah, right. They’d been married days. I doubted Cassara would allow that.
“You mean you never?” I raised one eyebrow, finding it too hard to believe. She seemed like an adamant woman, and if he had slept with her, I couldn’t fault him. Theyweremarried.
He shook his head. “Nope. And she’s pissed. I’ll dissolve the marriage based on the grounds we haven’t consummated.”
I couldn’t believe we were having this conversation while riding on a freaking dragon! His nonchalant attitude at annulling his marriage shocked me.
“But then you can’t be king without a wife and heirs.” Did he truly know what he was saying?
He ran his fingers through his hair. “You let me worry about that, okay? Just trust me.”
Alright. He’d earned that much, hadn’t he?
Leaning into him, I snuggled in close. His arms wrapped around me.
If we could just stay like this, flying high above the city without ever having to return to reality, that would be great.
But, unfortunately, I knew that wasn’t an option.
Chapter Ten
Between Luka,Demi, and Sawyer, they’d split all of the breeder survivors into three even groups and offered to take in one group each. Of course, my mother and half-sister were in the group that now lived in Vampire City. The survivors were given accommodations in the more modern portion of Vampire City where the feeders lived. It was thought they would be among humans and feel the most normal there.
The fey didn’t try to retaliate after our invasion. Luka had evidence of their crimes in the spoken testimony of the freed women if they ever tried. Besides, the werewolf-vampire alliance was too strong. So long as the vampires and werewolves stood together, the fey wouldn’t try anything. All the more reason for Luka to remain king.
My mom and Maple were allowed to live in the guest house with me and Liv. We all had fun getting to know each other over the next two days. It was traumatic at times. One of us would ask a question that clearly triggered trauma, and then we had to gracefully change the subject, but all in all my mom and Maple seemed settled. They were just glad to be free.
