Without another word, he stepped out of the feeding booth and walked away with her. The moment I heard the door close behind them, I slid against the wall and to the ground of the feeding room, bursting into sobs.

Liv stepped inside, closed the door, and sat next to me, wrapping her arms around me as I cried. I cried for Sterling, I cried for Luka, I cried for my horrible choices in men and that I always fell for the wrong guy. I cried so hard my voice was hoarse by the end of it.

“You fell in love with him, didn’t you?” Liv asked softly.

I hadn’t admitted this fully to myself until now. All I could do was nod my head.

She sighed, wrapping me tighter in her arms. “You just had to go and fall in love with a betrothed vampire king, didn’t you?”

My sobs turned into laughter, which she matched, before mine turned back into pathetic sobs.

“I’m telling you, we need normal guys. Like—”

“Accountants and engineers?”

She nodded. “Accountants and engineers don’t go becoming vampire kings.”

It was true. I had a broken guy finder. Mine went to the hottest, most emotionally unavailable man in the vicinity and latched on for dear life.

“He’s king. You’ve done your part. Now we save the breeder slaves and then go back to Spokane and findnormalguys. Then we can try to take down Maz and get revenge for everything she did to us,” Liv said.

I nodded, but knew in my heart it wouldn’t be that easy.

Wait for me,his letter had said, and I was going to do just that … wait as long as my heart could bear.

Chapter Nine

Demi pulledme in for a hug. “Aww, I don’t want to say goodbye, this has been so fun!”

I peered past her at her husband. The werewolf alpha was wearing his adorable baby boy in a carrier on his chest as he stood waiting for his wife in front of her white Range Rover. Walsh stood proudly beside him, in full view of everyone and no longer in hiding. Luka was crowned king three days ago and he’d exonerated his friends immediately. Now he was calling for an army of volunteers to free the breeder slaves from the clutches of the fey.

The Elder Council approved his request to lead a contingent up into fey territory, without warning them, on the stipulation that any and all warriors were volunteers for the cause. And that any blowback, like war declared on the vampires, would be shared between the werewolves. It meant that if anyone attacked the vamps, Sawyer and Demi would come out in droves to protect them. It was the first real peace accord between the two races in hundreds of years and everyone seemed pretty excited about it.

There were scowls here and there when Demi walked past, or when the vamps saw Sawyer drive in like he owned the place and hug Luka like they were brothers, but for the most part the vampires here seemed to crave change. Morgana had fled back to Spokane and I would keep my promise to wipe her from the face of the Earth the moment I got my new hunter guild up and running. She would be my first kill, a truly evil woman I had witnessed with my own two eyes.

Demi pulled away after a while and then I hugged Sage tightly.

“You better be at my wedding!” she declared.

I laughed. “I’m so there.”

“Me too!” Liv tackle-hugged us, squishing me between them both.

Someone crashed into my back and squeezed, and I laughed when I looked back and saw Demi getting in on our little hug sandwich.

Demi’s son let loose with a wail then and Sawyer cleared his throat. “Creek wants his mama.”

Demi pulled away from us and approached her son, cooing as she plucked him out of the carrier, smothering his face with kisses.

Sage winked at me. “We will meet at the rendezvous tomorrow night.”

Yes.In twenty-four hours we would team up with the wolves and free all those women. Demi’s spies, AKA Bennet and Talon, had followed them to their new location at the edge of the Dark Woods, deep in Dark Fey Territory. They had moved, just as we had thought, but we’d followed them the entire way.

Excitement and apprehension thrummed through me at the thought of meeting my mom.

“See you tomorrow,” I told them.

Tomorrow night, I took a little something back from Maz for everything she’d taken from me.
