He nodded. “There is one in Coeur d’Alene. I can have it for you within thirty minutes.”

Liv grinned. “I’ll take a bacon whopper with cheese and onion rings.”

He tapped something on his phone and looked at me expectantly. “And for you, miss?”

Okay … I could definitely get used to this. “The same. Thanks.”

“Shoot wait, we don’t have any money,” I added. It was going to take some time for it to settle in that I was suddenly broke.

Gunner looked nonplussed. “Everything is paid for by the crown. You’re feeders to a prince. It’s a very important job.”

Feeders? Plural? So that’s how he got Liv in here?

“In that case, can you add two strawberry milkshakes,” Liv said.

He nodded. “Of course, my lady. Anything else?”

Liv shrugged. “Think that’s all for now. Do you have Netflix?”

She dropped her hunter bag and walked into the living room.

Gunner inclined his head. “The TV is equipped with all of the channels and shows that humans like.”

We aren’t exactly human anymore… weird thought. Did vampires not like TV? That was even weirder. Maybe they thought they were too good for TV, like it rotted your brain.

“I’ll take my leave, then, if that’s all? The food will be here shortly,” he said.

I murmured my thanks and he bowed before leaving, closing the door behind him.

“This is weird,” I told Liv.

“This is awesome!” she said as she scrolled through the movies with her feet up on the couch. “I find out I’m suddenly broke and ten minutes later I’m a sugar baby to a rich vampire prince.”

I snort-laughed. “I don’t think Luka is old enough to be a sugar daddy.”

“Whatever. Let’s stay here however long he will let us.” She stopped on a teen drama and clicked the play button.

Leaving Liv to veg out on the couch, I did a quick tour of the place. It was a three-bedroom guest home, with two bathrooms, a cute little kitchen off the living room, and a formal dining room off the front entryway. So Luka must be sleeping in the castle. With Cassara…

I slumped into a chair in the living room and stared aimlessly at the TV, not really paying attention for the next hour.

Liv was good at turning her brain off in times of stress. She was already into the fifth episode of some new show, our burgers long eaten, when there was a knock at the door. I knew who it was even before I answered. I sensed him.

Luka.

I cleared my throat. “I’ll get it.”

What the hell did he want? He’d already fed this morning and he was high as a kite if he thought he was feeding twice a day now just because he was a king in training or whatever.

I yanked the door back with a growl in my throat, still bitter about that kiss and finding out about his fiancée. “You better not be asking for a second meal so soo—”

I jerked to a stop when I saw the blood seeping through the front of his shirt, the paleness of his skin, and the weary look in his eye.

“Crap, Luka.” I rushed forward as he staggered into me. “What happened?”

My heart softened as I took in the state of him.

He stumbled inside, leaning on me for support as I veered him into the dining room and sat him down. He winced with each movement, more blood pooling at his abdomen.
