‘Iwas going to tell you.’
‘Tellme what, Aurora?’His eyes were brown again, but hestill looked pissed. I braced myself for his reaction and told him everything Iknew, including the fact that Devis died young. As usual, he listened with astone-faced expression that scared the shit out of me. When I was done, hesighed.
‘SoNahuel can do some test to find out?’
‘Yes,that’s why I need to go to Canada with him.’
‘Ifsome angel or other spirit is possessing you, I will probably lose my mind,’he confessed.
‘Metoo! I feel like ripping my skin off! But it makes sense to the witches why Ihave so many powers. Why the balance is out of whack. I might be here to fixit.’
‘InIndian mythology, a Devi is a Goddess incarnate. She comes to Earth to do oneof three things. Create, Preserve or Destroy.’
Hiswords gave me chills. He continued,‘So how will you fix the balance?War? What about our wedding, having babies, growing old together?’Hecomplained and I hated that he looked at me different now.
Iwas in his arms the second he said that.‘All of that will happen no matterwhat. This is my life and no one controls it but me. You should have learnedthat by now.’
WhenI was stuck in the dream with the black witch, Kai had come to get me out. Hehad confessed he thought I was an Alpha because he knew no one could make me doanything I didn’t want to. I reminded him of that.
Kaileaned his forehead against mine.‘Go with Nahuel. Find out if you are a Devi.We will deal with it if and when we have to.’
Hekissed me quickly and began to walk to the front of the house.
“Kai.”
Heturned back and gave me a sad look. A look that said he already thought theworst.
“I’mnot going anywhere until I’m ready. As long as you and my mom are alive andbreathing in this world, than so am I.” My wolf had come to the surface. Henodded and gave me a half smile.
Ifelt rage boiling up inside me. Where was this ‘angel’ when I needed herbefore? When my twin brother drowned, when my dad was beating me up, when I hadno money? But then, a sudden peace came over me, like my fiery anger had beendoused in water. I saw mist surround my body. Magic? It wasn’t mine. Was it? Iwasn’t meaning to. I looked around the woods. I took a deep breath through mynose. Nothing. I shook my head to clear my thoughts. The mist dissipated. Thatwas weird.
Tara
Imade my way to the front of the house where Max, Jai, Akash, Devon, and Kaiwere flying the drone catcher and drinking beers. Probably not the best combo.
“IsEmma home?” I asked Devon. He nodded. “I’m going to go check on her.”
Emmahad become my best friend. She was loyal, kind, and generous. Being that I wassuch a dominant wolf and she was submissive, I always felt the need to protecther. This was ramped up one hundred times since she was pregnant. I tried notto think of all the horrible things that I had heard can go wrong with awerewolf pregnancy. Emma would be fine.
Aftera short walk, I knocked at her back door. I smiled looking at her lawn andremembering it as the place Kai had proposed to me.
“Comein, Aurora!” she shouted from deep inside the house.
I wentinto the house and followed the soft talking sounds into a back room. Emma was lyingon her bed and Diya was squirting jelly on her large, round bump.
Igot excited. “Are we finding out the gender today? Shouldn’t Devon be here?”
Emmalaughed. “Aurora, I told you! I don’t want to know. I am grateful for whatever.Devon gets queasy at these things.”
Awerewolf that beheads people gets queasy at an ultrasound? I looked at Diya.“You will know the sex of the baby, right? You can tell me?”
Diyasmiled. “Not if my patient doesn’t want me to.”
“Well, how am I supposed to buy a good gift if I don’t know the sex?”
Emmasqueezed my hand. “Grey, yellow, green, brown.”
Umph.No fun.
