I looked out the window and noticed we were passing some seriously nice houses. Like million dollar mansions. “Is this guy rich or what?” I asked mymentor.
Isaac chuckled. “He can turn toilet paper into platinum. Yes, he has ungodly amounts ofmoney.”
I groaned. “Then why would he help us? Even if he needs dragon scales, he could buy them all off the blackmarket.”
Isaac looked out the window and sighed. “Because that woman I told you I was with, the one heloved…”
Inodded.
“She was a skyborn, and he loved her more than lifeitself.”
Oh shit. Why would Isaac sleep with someone’s woman like that? It was so unlike the man I knew. But I’d done some messed-up shit in my life, including running away from the pack and giving my blood to an evil witch, so I wasn’t going to judge. It was also not lost on me that he spoke about the woman in the pasttense.
I turned around, and saw that Keegan was behind us just as Logan pulled the car to astop.
“We’re here.” He turned the ignitionoff.
I’d met an elf, a fairy, and now I was going to check “alchemist” off mylist.
“Let’s do this,” Isaac stated, and left thecar.

Chapter 6
The estate was huge.The driveway alone was bigger than most houses. It sat perched on a wooded hill, private and secluded. There was a high wall, and a guard gate enclosed the entire thing. Isaac instructed me to walk up to it and tell him who I was. Only when he came outside would we reveal we’d brought the druid with us. It was a shoddy plan, but all we had. Isaac gripped his staff and huddled behind the parked car, some ten feet away with the rest of the team while Logan and I approached thegate.
“Just randomly tell some stranger over an intercom that I’m a dragon shifter? Doesn’t seem smart,” I told Logan as wewalked.
He nodded. “But how else do we get him to let usin?”
I sighed. It was the only plan wehad.
We approached the small gray box. Logan nodded to me and I pressed thebutton.
It made a binging sound like a bell and a firm male voice came over theintercom.
“No soliciting. Thank you,” he said and ended thecall.
Geez. He must have a camera in that boxtoo.
I pushed the button again. His voice came back over the intercom, frustrated and angry. “I’m notbuying—”
“Good, I’m not selling shit.” I interrupted him. “I’m skyborn,” Ibarked.
Silence. “What did you say?” His voice held wonder,curiosity.
Logan held his arm up to the box, about a foot away, and transformed it to blackscales.
The gates opened immediately and Logan winked atme.
‘Showoff.’I wished I could learn to partially shift like that. It would be so handy when needing scales or proving who I was … or just plain showing off. Isaac and the rest of the crew came out from behind the car and followed us as we walked in. Dominic had his guns out, held low at his sides. Keegan’s shotgun lay against his left leg and I spotted a taser in Sophie’s right hand. Hmm, that was new. Isaac held one of his staffs in one hand and a plastic bag with the ashes from my staff in the other. Danny just walked casually at Keegan’s side, but was no doubt ready to sling magic whenever needed. If this guy was friendly to skyborn, why were we so heavilyarmed?
The front door burst open and a tall, good-looking man with black and gray hair stood there looking excitedly at Logan and I. His skin was dark but not nearly as dark as Isaac’s, and he wore a crisp suit. When his eyes scanned our party, his face fell into a mask ofhatred.
“You,” he spat in Isaac’sdirection.
