I hated to add any more drama to thismoment, but I had to speak about what was on my heart.
“Nahuel, tell me how to kill him.” Myvoice was calm but there was a fire raging inside of me as hot and deadly asthe one burning the huts down. I knew I didn’t have to speak his name, he wouldknow I was talking about Mukesh.
Nahuel turned to face me and placed one handon each of my shoulders. “Now that you are the anchor, he will have extrareason to come for you.”
I tried to ignore the fear that clenchedmy gut. “I know that. Tell me how to wipe that bastard from the face of theearth.”
Nahuel looked over my shoulder for amoment at nothing, just staring into the air, but I saw images flash within hiseyes like I was watching a movie in his pupils. Nothing about this guy couldsurprise me anymore. He was in the category with aliens.
“What do you see?” I asked him, suddenlyuncomfortable with having this conversation out in the open only a few feetfrom where Mukesh murdered Lina. Nahuel smiled for a moment and then lookedresigned as if something saddened him.
“We will kill Mukesh, do not worry. Youjust need to figure out how to help the humans.” I was having a hard timeprocessing what he said because he sounded so confident about Mukesh and in thesame breath he asked me to …
“What?Helpthe humans? Did I hearthat right?” I leaned in to hear him better and he dropped his hands from myshoulders and gave me a look you would give a child having a tantrum.
“You’re not a wolf anymore. You mustconcern yourself with what’s fair and just for all.” His words probably seemedlike wise counsel to him, but to me they were bat shit crazy.
“Fair and just?” Hah! “Okay, what’s fairand just is that the humans leave the wolves alone and stop kidnapping them andexperimenting on them.” My mind flashed back to seeing my father strapped tothat gurney, the way the humans just treated him like a lab rat.
“I agree.” Nahuel put his hands out tocalm me. “But can you still help them? Is there some way? Did your vision showyou the way?”
I shook my head. “You don’t even want toknow about my vision, okay. It was awful.”
Nahuel looked disturbed at my comment.“How awful?”
I shrugged. “Ya know, just my familytalking about my death, so clearly I die or nearly do. Then, Lina told me all abouther gift and how I needed to take it or all would be lost and Gavin would turninto Mukesh. Then there was a little girl with cancer, whose mom was pleadingwith me to heal her, and I was trying to heal her when Avery took her from meandbither. Oh, and let’s top all of that off with an actual attackfrom the Skin Walker, which I barely escaped.”
Nahuel reached up and rubbed his chin, the worry lines around his mouth crinkling. “So, you must escape death, healthe ailing humans, then using your new gifts from Lina, help defeat the SkinWalker and save Gavin from being lost to his darkness.”
He wasn’t laughing, so I realized he wasserious. “Yep, I guess so. That’s it.”
Nahuel’s lips tugged into a smile. “Fearnot, young cub, I will help you along the way.”
Great. That made me feel so much better.
The sound of crunching gravel drew myattention and I turned to see Jaxon at the wheel of our Range Rover drivingonto the land.Thank God!I took off running to meet them, hoping formore news about what was happening back home.
Gavin was the first out of the car. In threequick long strides he ran toward me, lifting me up into a tight hug. His scentsurrounded me and my inner bear settled inside of me, content in the arms of mymate.
“I was worried about you. What happened?”Gavin’s husky voice in my ear sent chills down my spine. He smelled like homeand I had just been through some heavy shit, so it was good to see my man.
After he finally released me, I met his green-eyedgaze. “Lina is dead and Nahuel took me through some wormhole back to Canada, and now I’m the anchor or whatever. It’s been crazy and I don’t really want totalk about it. How are my mom and dad?”
Jaxon stepped out of the car with Averyand they both crossed to meet us. Gavin hadn’t answered me, so I put out mypack bond feelers and noticed Jaxon was trying poorly to hide some erraticcrazy energy.
“Jaxon.” I used my motherly tone as helowered his eyes and kicked the dirt, not meeting my gaze.
I looked to my mate, giving him my iciestglare. “Gavin, tell me.”
He blew air through his lips and ran hisfingers over his dark hair. “You have enough on your plate.”
Unbelievable. I wasn’t one of thosefragile girls that couldn’t handle bad shit. “Come on, out with it already!” Ishouted to the group. Mason was the last to get out of the car and he justlooked over at my outburst like I was crazy.
Finally, Gavin stiffened beside me. “Wordgot out that werewolf plasma can heal humans. Coincidentally, the humangovernment has suspended all werewolf rights. They said they are now in theclass of animals, and as such, have the rights of animals. They can be experimentedon, kept as pets–”
A sob escaped my throat and my hand cameout to stop Gavin. I was wrong. I couldn’t handle this.Pets?Didn’t he justfreaking say pets?! I wanted to vomit. How had this happened so fast? How hadour beautiful country taken such a dark turn so quickly? A turn which now leftan entire race ofpeoplein the same class asanimals.
“No,” I growled. I couldn’t let this happen.
