I groaned. That would never work. Thehumans would get impatient and start kidnapping wolves and we would be back tosquare one.
“Well, what do you think of my vision? Isthere another way?” I asked her.
She chewed her lip. “Draining the wolvesof blood and plasma kills them and that’s bad.”
Jaxon looked at her like she was aNeanderthal. “Killing wolf bad,” Jaxon repeated and she reached over and sockedhim in the arm.
“Ow.” He frowned.
“But,” she added, “maybe there is a wayto help the humans without killing wolves.”
I wanted to growl again, to protest thatthe humans didn’t deserve helping after seeing the video. But I knew that wasjust one human and I knew that when desperate, I would probably do anything forthose I loved.
“I’m listening,” I told my best friend.
She nodded. “Good. I will tell you when Ifigure it out. I need some time.”
Mason chuckled. “Buzz kill.”
Jaxon rolled his eyes, giving Mason along look. “No one is buzzed.”
“And we never will be unless we can getour hands on some witches’ wine,” he retorted.
We all collectively groaned. Seriously. This kid was obsessed with getting ahold of witches’ wine at some point in hislife. Wait.Witches.The witches!
“Mason! You’re a genius!” I shouted.
Mason grinned, showcasing the dimple inhis left cheek. “I know.” He winked.
Ignoring him, I jumped up. “We need tocall on the witches’ help. They’ve been silent for too long. Maybe they canhelp us figure this out.”
When we saved my dad from the governmentexperiment camp, the dark witches had helped the humans cloak them. Which meantthe dark witches might be helping in this situation, too. Rounding up thewerewolves and keeping them compliant or helping to hide other things to keepthe government looking innocent.
“I’m calling Gretchen,” I announced andpadded through the hall to our bedroom.
It was time to even the playing field.
*
“Hello?” Gretchen’s soft voice came onthe line. Our coven leader was soft when necessary but tough when needed aswell.
“Gretchen, it’s Anya. Have you seen thenews?” I cut right to the point, no need for small talk with her.
“Oh, honey, I’ve been so worried aboutyou and Jaxon. The whole coven is over and we’ve seen it. What do you need?”
Relief poured through me at her eagernessto help. I sat down on the edge of the bed and told her my worries. I told herof my original vision where people were rounding up werewolves like dogs, Itold her about Lina and my responsibility to Nahuel and his people, I told hereverything. She patiently waited until I finished.
“Well, dear, I can’t speak for everywitch but if you need our help, the coven is yours. We can hide wolves, we cantrack wolves, we can counter dark witches. Just tell me what you need.”
Tears lined my eyes as my throat clenchedwith unshed emotion. “Gretchen, you’re the best. Let me get a plan in place andI will contact you.”
“Okay, dear. Lots of love,” she saidbefore hanging up.
I ran my fingers along the bedspread, lost in thought. I had one more call to make and it was probably the mostimportant.
After dialing the number, I waited.
He picked up on the first ring. “Anya.”His voice held so much fear, it was unlike him.
