I didn’t comment either way, only held out my hands for him to secure them. The key he placed in a small pocket in his cloak.

“Where are Lucian and Stefan?”

“They’ll be joining us shortly. Azrael was very specific in his instructions.”

I froze as the invisible hands wrapped around my throat and nearly sent me into a panic spiral. Had Hyas been a traitor this whole time? “Azrael? Do you serve him now?”

Hyas gave me a scrutinizing look. “I serve the warborn before all others, something my sister has been forgetting as of late.” He grew thoughtful for a moment. “I know this may seem alarming to you right now, but I hope you’ll see the potential in all of this.”

“Potential for what?”

“Our alliance. With your lands and my armies, there’s nothing we can’t accomplish.”

“You mean conquer.”

“Be mindful of your words, Vincent. The warborn don’t tolerate such insolence.”

Hyas angled me toward the door. One hand gestured for me to lead; the other he placed firmly at my back. It may as well have been a blade.
