I sighed deeply. “I’m tired of all the intrigue and the lies. Why can’t we all just be honest with each other?” Stefan only looked at me like I was being naïve. “What?”
“I am trying to imagine a life where one does not have to lie in order to survive.”
My thoughts circled back to you, the lies you’d told me as a child and the secrets you were keeping now. And I was bitter because not only had you made me a promise after the truth came out about my past life, it also meant that you didn’t trust me.
“Did Orcus say anything about our visit to the under realms?” I asked.
“No.”
Let it go, Vincent.
“Lucian probably knows the catacombs better than anyone,” I said at last.
“I could suggest it as… how do you say, double date?”
I shook my head. “I’m not going down there without some serious backup. God knows what we might find. And we’ll need proof before we can make any accusations.”
“Perhaps Henri would know what to do?”
You’d at least know whatnotto do. “I’ll bring him with me and Lucian as well. We’ll go down tonight after the formal Council business has concluded.”
“It could be nothing,” Stefan said to reassure me, but somehow, I doubted it.
