“That’s normal for being in jail.Your days will run together, and you won’t remember the date because you don’t have a newspaper or even a television to see.I just want to ask you some questions about your health, and we’ll go from there.”He asked her about a dozen questions, none of which she had an answer for.“You’re doing fine, Janice.Just fine.Tell me what brought you into the jail in the first place.Surely you remember that.”
“I can’t.Something about Lisa and my grandson. She wants to take him away from me.Well, I’m going to be raising him even if I have to kill her to get to him.He should have been mine in the first place.”He told her that she had to remain calm or they’d make him leave her.“I don’t want to be calm.I want him with me so that I can raise him to be just like my David.Where does she get off marrying after my son died? She should have died with his name on her lips and not married some Savage person just because he has a lot of money.I have money, too, and I’m going to use it to get what I want.”
“I’m afraid that I can’t help you with that, Janice. You’re going to need to calm yourself down before you have another heart attack. You don’t want to end up in the hospital again, do you?The last time you were in there for nearly six months.I know how you enjoy your freedom. You might not be so lucky this time.”She asked him what he was going on about.“You might not make it this time with the way that you’re going.I suggest you calm down and let her raise her son.If you’re this stressed out just getting him, what are you going to do with a kid in your house that isn’t going to be happy with you for killing his mom to get him?”
“He’ll not know.No one will tell him unless it’s me.If they do, then there will be hell to pay, and I’m not afraid to use some of my considerable wealth to make sure that happens.”He pulled something out of his bag and handed it to her.“What’s this?Nitro?I have no need for anything like that.I’m as healthy as a horse.”
“You’re not, and I believe you know it.Right now you’re rubbing your chest where your heart is supposed to be.”She eyed him hard and asked him what he was talking about.“You’re having chest pains right now if I don’t miss my bet.You keep this up, and you’re going to be dead before you get out of here.I want you to be on a better diet too.All this food that they’re feeding you might be good to eat, but it’s not good for you.”
“Don’t you be messing with my diet.I love what I’m getting to eat here. It’s all I have to look forward to on a daily basis.”He told her that she was going to die before she got out of jail again.“You leave my living to me.I know what I’m doing, and I’m going to be around a lot longer than you will be.Mark my words. If I don’t have David by the end of the month, then I’m going to be going on a hunting spree that this little town will be talking about for generations.See that I don’t.”
“It’s your funeral.”He packed up his things and left the small vial of nitro pills on the table between them.“That is for you.Put one under your tongue and let it dissolve. If you need more than three, have them call an ambulance for you.I’m serious, Janice. You’re going to be dead if you don’t calm down and take care of yourself. And starting right now.”
“I know what I’m doing.”He nodded once and left her to her own devices. She didn’t know what she was doing, and the pressure in her chest was so bad that she took one of the small pills and put it under her tongue. The pain lessened, but it didn’t go away. She didn’t want to die in the stupid jail, so she was going to pop them like candy until she was feeling better.By the time she took the second one, she was feeling better and decided that she was going to keep them on her if they worked that well. Not that she’d admit this to anyone, but she was sort of afraid of dying.
