“Did it work?” Darren asked quietly, nuzzling into the crook of Aiden’s neck. He sounded hopeful and guarded at the same time, like he wasn’t sure if he wanted a positive or negative answer. “Did you feel less alone?”

“I’m not sure. Initially, maybe. When the trial was over and I had no idea what was happening, I rarely thought of it. I… was obsessed with her case and… getting to you.” As for now… Aiden hadn’t thought about it for a while, had let himself forget it was even there until tonight when Darren had seen it.

“I see.”

Did it bother Darren? That it was there? Aiden wanted to ask and at the same time didn’t, because he wasn’t sure what answer he hoped for.

Darren didn’t probe. He snuggled closer to Aiden and breathed in his skin. “Will you come see Sara with me?” he whispered when Aiden began wondering if he’d fallen asleep.

They’d not spoken to Sara since they’d gone hunting for the Valrais Legacy, though Aiden had chosen not to push the issue until Darren brought it up himself. Now seemed like the perfect time and the thought of meeting the energetic AI princess made him smile.

“Of course,” Aiden said, kissing Darren’s forehead. “We’ll go meet her whenever you are ready.”
