White hot fury wraps around my spine.

Chapter 30

Hope

I can’t breathe.

Derek is close, but he doesn’t know where I am. I only heard part of what Zane said on the phone, but I saw Derek’s truck coming up the drive, and I sprinted inside, watching from the second floor as he came up the porch steps, making sure he followed me.

As long as he doesn’t go toward the greenhouse, I can listen to him rant all day long. He’s made it up to the second floor, and he’s torn apart our room across the hall.

“Nobody’s coming to save you, you stupid slut,” he snarls.

That’s where he’s wrong.

I’m lying under Dax’s bed, covered up by Zane’s throw blanket that I dragged under with me as I threw myself into this room.

I have Dax’s weapon-ish belt in my hand, too, but I fucking hope I don’t have to use it.

Fingers shaking, I pull the map screen to refresh the location data. Zane and Ridge disappeared from it for a while, but they’re back on the screen now. Zane is at the greenhouse and Ridge is at the barn.

I watch as the dots move across the screen, getting closer.

Derek’s footsteps stop in the doorway of Dax’s bedroom.

The silence is just as terrifying as the pacing.

“Is this where you fuck him, you cunt?” Hesmashes something against the wall with a loud crash. “Never should have taken you in.”

I jump, sucking in a breath.

And everything goes still.

“I hear you, Hope. Where the fuck are you?” He yanks the couch away from the wall and smashes open the closet door.

I’m shaking so hard I know he’ll be able to hear me any second?—

Smash.

The bed moves on top of me and I scream.

Chapter 31

Zane

I take the porch steps in one stride and, as I cross the threshold, I hear Hope let out a bloodcurdling scream from upstairs.

Redoubling my speed, I sprint upstairs, not caring about being quiet now.

Ideally, I draw this asshole out, away from Hope.

“Getup, you stupidwhore,” he snaps from inside Dax’s room. His voice is harsh, wired tight, the consonants bitten off.

I round the corner, filling the doorway.

He’s bent over the bed, trying to get at Hope who is underneath it.

Smart girl.
