I scooped some chicken and rice onto my fork and put it in my mouth. I wasn’t sure where Kane ordered the food from, but I would find out because it was so good.
“My bar would be different because I’m there a lot of the time, and niggas know she’d be off-limits, so I wouldn’t have to worry about her there.”
“Interesting. Do you think you’ll even settle down?”
He chewed the food in his mouth, then wiped it. The toothpick he had in his mouth sat on a napkin on the table. I noticed it was a jar of toothpicks on his desk, along with a bunch of pen tops. There was also a jar of hard candy. I wanted to ask him about it but refrained. I was more curious about his response.
“I do think so. When? I really don’t know.”
His response bothered me for reasons I didn’t want to admit to myself.
“You still didn’t answer my question, though. Why are you still single?”
“The last guy I was with was trash. That’s it, that’s all.”
There was no need to elaborate, because my ex was irrelevant.
“Understood. Did you like your food?”
“Yes. I’ll have to get something from there again.”
Kane closed up his container, then put it back in the bag it came in. I still had some left, but I was full, so I closed my container as well.
“As long as you don’t have it with another nigga, we good.”
“And what happens if I do?” I challenged.
The smile that spread across Kane’s face should have made me nervous, but it didn’t.
“I don’t think you want to find out, Munch. Oh, I heard about what happened earlier. You got more spunk than I thought.”
I was surprised he waited as long as he did to bring up the incident with Drizzle. I wasn’t sure who told him, but I wouldn’t put it past her if she called him herself. She seemed like the type who would tattle like he could do something to me.
“Is there a problem I hurt one of your whores?”
Kane chuckled. “Nah. I wish I had seen it. Probably would have my dick hard.”
My breath hitched in my throat. This man just said whatever came to mind, and I wasn’t sure how to take it.
“Anybody ever tell you that you have no filter?”
“All the time.” He laughed. “Thanks for coming to eat with me.”
“Damn, you’re putting me out?”
Kane got up, walked over to the small bathroom, and washed his hands. When he came out, he walked over to the table where his tattoo supplies were and pulled out some stuff.
“Not at all. I do have a client coming in. If they are cool with it, you can stay and watch me work.” He winked.
I didn’t have anything to do, so I told him I would stay. I needed something to take my mind off what I saw on that flash drive, and Kane was the perfect distraction.
It had been a few days since Munch pulled up on me at my shop, and I had been thinking about her ever since. I’d never wanted to kiss anyone as badly as I wanted to kiss her, but I held back. I was highly attracted to her, but the thing that gave me pause was her age. There was a six-year age gap between us, and I didn’t go for women that young. Munch was the exception, though, because she didn’t even come off as so young. Drizzle acted younger than Munch did if I kept it real with myself. The way Drizzle acted didn’t really bother me, because I wasn’t trying to take her seriously. Munch, on the other hand, I could see shit building with us for real, and it scared me a little. I knew what love looked like because I witnessed my father properly love my mother, but I had never experienced it for myself. I knew if giventhe opportunity, I could treat Munch well, but I wasn’t even sure if that was something she wanted.
I found myself wanting to be in her presence as much as I could; that was why I sat at the bar more than usual. I called her sometimes when I was at my shop and talked to her between clients. We talked about everything. She opened up about previous relationships and how her brother would run them off if he thought they weren’t good enough for her. If I could have, I would shake his hand, because if he hadn’t done that, she might not have been single.
The more I spent time with her, the more I thought about settling down. I could see her riding on the back of my bike. I saw shit with her that I had never pictured before.
I knew she came to the club to figure out what really happened to her brother, and I didn’t blame her. Rameek’s death never sat right with me either. As long as Munch didn’t think I did it, I could help her. I also knew Rico, Tech, or Slider didn’t have anything to do with it either. I really didn’t think anyone in the Vipers did, but something was weird about it. I was sure, one day, the truth would come to light.
