The audience gives a collective “awww,” and I know my cue when I hear it.
“Actually, Swiss, I hope you won’t mind,” I say, “but I have a question for Becca.”
There’s a gasp from the audience, and it’s like the whole room is holding its breath. Swiss quirks an eyebrow at me but he gives me the floor. I turn to Becca, and she’s looking at me like I’m her whole world.
She’s mine and I’m hers, and I want to make that a forever thing.
“Becca,” I say, my voice already getting choked up. “You’re my everything, and as hard as this whole situation was, I am grateful every day to have you in my life. You andThea and Rosie are my family, and I just want you to know that I’m always going to be here, that you can trust me with your heart, and I’m going to take care of it.”
Becca’s eyes shine with tears, and she looks like she wants to throw her arms around me, but is hesitating because that wasn’t, in fact, a question.
I pull the ring box out of my pocket, and tears slip down her cheeks as she breaks into a grin. We’ve talked about getting married, but I told her I wanted to get through the show first, to make sure there wasn’t anything in the airing that gave her pause about us. She felt the same way, but it was me she was worried would run.
I’m not going anywhere, and I want to make sure that she knows it. “Becks, you’re my best match, my one hundred percent,” I say, and her grin becomes wider, remembering, as I always have, that conversation about soul mates in the carriage. “I want to be with you forever. Will you marry me?”
“Yes!” Becca says, and then she throws herself at me, tackling me back on the couch. I’m not sure she’s even really looked at the ring, which I bought when Jason snuck me out for a work thing, but there will be time for that later.The audience cheers, and while I didn’t think I was going to do this on air tonight, I had the ring because I wanted to ask the minute all of this was over.
This is better, though, not because I had anything to prove, but because our story, for better or for worse, is tied up in this season ofChasing Prince Charming.
I’m ready to put the chase behind us and move on to our happily ever after.
