“That makes no sense, woman.” The giant Taurean unfurled himself from the seat and headed back to the galley.

“Sure it does,” she said, following him. Their voices disappearing to a background hum.

T’arq chuckled.

“What’s with those two?” Krystal inclined her head at the retreating pair.

“Who? Domik and CJ?” T’arq looked at her in surprise. “Nothing.”

“I wouldn’t be so sure about that.”

Checking to make sure there were no Xakul ships following them, T’arq turned in his seat to watch Krystal. She had made it through a space battle without batting an eyelid. Well, almost.

“You did well, little mouse.”

“I did, didn’t I?” she said, sitting up a little straighter. “Better than last time, right?”

“Are you kidding me? Last time you barely made it out of the hangar. This time you were in a proper battle.”

Krystal stared at the viewscreen, watching the asteroid field grow larger as they approached. “Maybe I just needed exposure therapy or something.” One side of her mouth lifted in an amused smirk.

“Or maybe it’s the company?”

She gave him a thoughtful look but didn’t answer, instead turning back to look out the window.

Domik emerged from the galley, CJ trailing him with a steaming cup of coffee in her hands. She blew on it and took a sip before speaking. “So, what’s the plan when we reach the baddies?”

Domik rolled his eyes, a movement that T’arq would have missed—and never believed had happened—except he’d turned around at CJ’s question.

Laila answered, “We bomb the fuck out of them.”

“We have a problem,” Zac said. “Incoming Xakul fighters!”
