Laila rolled away, taking the sheet with her. “I don't make a habit of sleeping with my colleagues.” Her voice was thick with unshed tears as she stood, wrapping the sheet around herself. “I don't know what else you think of me, but I need you to know that.”

Zac watched her as she turned to face him.

“Laila, I said that we shouldn't, not that we couldn't.” He stood, oblivious to his nakedness, and reached towards her to pull her into his arms.

“I know you stayed last night because I needed someone to watch over me, but I'm obviously fine now, so you don't need to stay any longer.” She mumbled against his chest, needing to say the words.

“You want me to leave?” Zac asked gently, running his hands up and down her back.

“No, not really,” she choked out. “I want you to stay.” She pulled back from him to meet his eyes. “But I need to know what you think we're doing here.” She waved her hand, gesturing between the two of them.

“You don't want a mate... a husband, do you?”

She laughed at how insane that sounded. “What? You've got to be joking!”

“Exactly. So why don't we just have some fun and see what happens?”

When he put it like that, it sounded logical.

She sighed, settling into his arms again. “Can we work together after this?”

“We tried keeping away from each other and look how that worked out.” He laughed, then more seriously, “Though if you want me to leave, I will.”

“No, I want you to stay.” She shook her head. “We still have some time before we need to get going. How shall we spend it?” She grinned mischievously at him.

“I'm sure we can think of something.” He lifted her easily, carrying her back to the bed.
