She tilted her head to one side as she looked at him. “If I remember correctly, we didn’t exchange last names.”

The jiggling of his foot increased. “You haven't answered the question.”

Her lips twitched as she pointedly looked at his foot. It stopped moving. “No, I didn't know who you were. Not at first.”

Laila regretted leaving so suddenly. He was just so overwhelming that she had lost her ability to focus that first night. Who was she kidding? He did that to her now, as well.

“You ran away,” he said, uncrossing his legs and leaning towards her.

“Only when I realized who you were. Before then…”

“You should have said something,” he said as he stood.

“Yes, I agree. You are right. But then what? What exactly could we have done?” Refusing to be intimidated, she stood up.

“I don’t know!” Zac choked out, rubbing his temples with one big hand.

So he had feelings for her? The knot of tension she had carried with her relaxed. But even if he did feel something for her, nothing had changed. They still had work to do, and that had to come first.

“So, those reports?” she asked again.

He nodded. “I’ll see what I can find for you.”

“Thank you,” she said, taking a step closer to the door but, hesitating, she turned towards him. “I really didn’t know who you were.”

When he said nothing in reply, she sighed and turned, leaving the room.
