Her forehead smoothed out."I'll take whatever help I can get.I didn't realize we'd sell out so quickly."
"Now you know how it's going to be for the rest of the month."Eve planned a similar street market for every Saturday in July.
She shrugged."It might be busier for this first one. We'll just have to wait and see."
We finished emptying the trays, and Maverick arrived with more.
"Thanks for helping," I said to him.
Maverick lowered his voice."They were asking me questions about books at Belle's tables.I had to get out of there before they realized I haven't read all of them."
"I thought you were reading more now that you're with Belle?"I asked as we worked to unload the new set of trays.
He shook his head."I'll never catch up to these readers. They read a book a day.Besides, I don't read romance, and that's what people were asking about."
I shuddered."I can't imagine.At least we can eat Reina's goodies."
When Maverick reached for a cookie, Reina shot him a look."I need those for the customers. You can have the leftovers in the first fridge."
Maverick's face brightened."Really?"
"Please let your brothers know too."
"It's whoever gets there first," Maverick said before he took off.
Reina's eyes widened."Are your brothers always so competitive?"
"Yes," I said simply.
She smiled."I didn't realize."
"They'll love helping you out, especially if you offer them food every time."
She looked at the line that was forming at her table."I don't mind what they eat as long as I have food to sell."
I touched her arm."I'm going to run back for more.Unless you need me here?"
She waved her hand at me."Go.I have a feeling I'm going to need more trays very soon."
I chuckled, knowing that this was a good thing. She was worried she'd made too much food and it would go to waste. But it was the opposite.
I hoped it was a good day for everyone. The shop owners worried that they wouldn't have traffic outside the usual Christmas season, so this would be good for everyone involved if it was a success.
The best-case scenario was that the number of visitors increased year-round.I knew that was Natasha and Eve's goal for the town. They wanted it to be treated like any other small town. The only difference was that holiday decorations never came down, and holiday music played on the speakers.
It was unique, and I hoped that visitors could see that. This started out as one of our biggest jobs.We had a town of buildings that we needed to maintain and bring up to code.
It had become something bigger than just a contract. We were invested in the town itself and the shop owners.
Chapter21
Reina
Iwas so busy that I barely had time to grab a sip of something to drink, much less food. The line never seemed to dwindle, and Morgan and his brothers were great about grabbing the rest of the baked goods. But now we were down to the last of what I'd made for the day.
My entire body ached, but it felt like a good day.
Morgan appeared with a couple of to-go boxes of food."Sit and eat."
